Culled from Facebook just now:

WARNING up in Guisborough woods people, top of concrete road, BARBED WIRE across track, as you can see face height -- well for me !!! Got me right on the eyelid and mouth

Careful out there, people. The poster says it's now been removed, but presumably the asshat who put it there is still at large.

FFS what is wrong with people?
Report to the police and whoever the landowner is.
I dont know the area, so I assume that riding etc is permitted there? (Im not trolling, just don't know)

It's FC land, and there is a 'Red' loop, but I don't think anyone has ever ridden it as the off piste stuff outnumbers it several times over, and infact one of the best decents is a climb on the red (I only figured this out when bored one day and decided to follow the red).

I can't remember which trail concrete road was though.

What upsets me most about things like this, is not the vitriol that drives the activity itself, but the tunnel vision, all consuming hatred of those that do it, preventing them from actually stopping to think about what the impact of their actions will be.

I bet if you took these people to one side and asked "do you want to permanently blind a father of these children?" *show photo of cute children* , they'd be horrified.

'Normal' people get too screwed-up on things that really aren't that important and allow their own passions to manifest into actions with horrific consequences, that could be avoided with better communication.

Sorry, crap rant. Actually, it's not a rant, it's just a *sigh* 🙁

Flipping heck. I've ridden through that gap a few times over the last couple of weeks. There are some absolute arseholes about.

Nasty cuts and lucky. Very hard to see a single run of wire.

Not been out that way for a while but as far as I recall they've been trying to stop people using that cut for a few years. The footpath had a style added nearby at a similar time. Stupid and dangerous if they've only put up a single line but others may have cut and removed any lower sections.

If y look at the original post on the unfortunate chap's FB, it's not FC land, but Guisborough Estates, and that the land owner did this to prevent bike access.

It's bad enough arseholes like Lance Moore (alledgedly)in Chopwell trying to block trails with branches, but this is taking it to a level where someone was very lucky not to lose an eye, or even die. I really hope whoever did this loses their liberty and livelyhood.

The best revenge on landowners like that?

Push your MPs to get access laws like Scotland.

From comments posted by a local rider on the Dirt mag story about this, it sounds like a really badly thought-out attempt by the landowner to keep riders on an established path.

They did not do it to target bikers, bikers keep vandalising that section of land because they are too lazy to carry their bikes over the stile not a few metres to the side - its not a trail, its private land, i ride this all the time and its always being ripped down - so stop with the attempted murder stuff it really is not helping

Noooo if they wanted to prevent people using that trail they would put up a fence or a load of very obvious wire. One strand of wire at that height is there to hurt someone and scare everyone else out of using the trail.*

Presumably this would be an attempted assault charge of some kind, hope the bloke has reported to police (I couldn't comment to suggest this on the original FB post)

*I guess there is a tiny chance that it was a feat of quite impressive stupidity and that they didn't realise what might happen but I think I'm on safe ground suggesting malice.

This stinks. Not that you need telling that. Someone did something similar on a trail near me, at about waist height. I managed to stop before impaling my stomach on the barbs thanks to my eagle-eye riding buddy calling out, but badly strained both wrists that I had dropped on the bars just in time. Bye bye winter climbing season ... 🙁 👿
