Is anyone familiar with the layout of Guisborough woods and have any tips on finding the juicy bits?
I'm meeting some old mates up north this weekend. We usually go to Hamsterley and ride all the mulchy, loamy off-piste goodness. But, there's one agitator who wants a change of scenery and seems to think Guisborough is worth a look.
I've looked on Youtube and while there's clearly trails there, there's not a lot of recent stuff to judge by. It's about an hours drive from where we are vs. about 45 minutes for Hamsterley.
Worth a visit, or give it a swerve?
I visited over the summer while nearby, similarly to you I always just visit Hamsterley with a mate who knows all the off pisted stuff. I used trailforks to plot the route and then followed it with my garmin and that made it an easy enough to follow route. Pretty obvious that a trail is starting really. Couple of them I really enjoyed and I'd defo go back again in fact I rode it two days in a row, not sure I'd go this time of the year just because its pure mud and I bet that trashes them pretty quickly and doubt they'd be as fun whereas at least with Hamsterley you can mix in the trailcentre for well drained etc. variety.
I was there a few weeks back. Forget Lovers Ledge anyway. Really overgrown. Was hailstones when i was there 🙁
Yep, lover’s ledge is well and truly a once beautiful relationship that is now defunct.
Guisborough is my main riding spot, and there’s some cracking trails but you do need to know where they are as they are well hidden, imo a good day at guisbro is better than a good day at hamsterly. However, because the trails are unofficial they don’t stand up well to wet weather and if it’s been pissing down I would go to Hamsterly instead (Hamsterly takes about 15 minutes longer to get to than guisbro for me).
I would normally choose Guisborough over Hamsterley, and they're about the same journey time for me. But agree with above comments about weather... due to piss down all tomorrow (here, assume it will be similar there).
