Thinking of a Sep/Oct trip and just wonder if anybody's used these guys?

Depends what you want from a guided ride but 150 a day seems a lot.

Its really not that hard to navigate your way round and there are loads of people here that would happily suggest a route.

150 for 6 is a good deal (£25 each) , if you are unfamiliar or just want good ride then probably worth it.

It might be a couple of weekdays Jekkyl, just a couple of all day loops (Fat/Chubby friendly) with a lunch stop, ideally.

Nothing too extreme, big drops,DH orientated. Just a good bit of, up/down XC/Trail stuff.

I was joking but if I'm free I'd gladly guide you round free of charge mate. There's loads on here who would likely offer you similar, I'm always happy to help fellow bikers if I can. Put up a thread nearer the time.

I got many excellent routes from stw-ers (especially Pook), I have to say the two routes from the Dark Peak book we did where not as good.

OP there was a thread a while ago where I posted a suggested 6-ish hour route. I love the riding there and since my first trip I have hardly been to Wales (both 3+ hours away)

Edale - Hollins Cross - Mam Tor - Limestone way - Cavedale - landslipped road - Rushup Edge - Pennine Bridleway - South Head - Jacobs Ladder - Edale

That being said your other option is up/down/around Ladybower including Hagg Farm/Beast/Hope Cross/Roman Road/Whinstone Lee Tor etc (book has a ride a bit like that)

+1 for the book, or local knowlage.

The Dark Peak isn't a big area like the Lake District, it's pretty much split into 4 valleys, pick your favorite trail in/out of each of them and link them up.

Are there options if it's peeing down?

Once we've committed (ferry etc) we're going.

I regularly ride the Peaks midweek and would happily show you round, always looking for excuses to ride. As said, start a thread nearer the time and you'll be offered plenty free guiding!

I too would gladly show you around the Peaks, ideally in exchange for a guided tour off the back of Glentress, all the hidden stuff up there Appeals to me but it's a long way for me to ride the trail centre and not find anything?

If the OP does end up needing/wanting a guide, Colin Down (Flattyres MTB) guides in the Peak (and elsewhere) and is a very nice bloke, too.

We're pretty close to booking now guys, mildbore/Jekkyl, where is best to stay? We do like food and beer, and not driving to rides. If all of that's possible?

£150 for guiding 6 is a lot of money? Just ask how much it costs to get qualified, keep qualifications up to date, cover liability insurance and all other business expenses. The guys are running a good business, and doing things properly (as does Colin from Flat Tyres), surely £25 per head ain't a lot for a great day out...

Just because it costs a lot to be a guide doesn't mean 150 isn't a lot. Loads of offers on here for people to do it for free. I'm sure you'll list lots of professional reasons why you should choose a guide and not a guy off the Internet but it's the Peak District not outer Mongolia

It's a sum of cash... it's £25/head
A ticket to see the new Captain America film is £10.60, chuck in a drink and popcorn and you will be up towards 20, another £5 gets you a day out and a ride.

What I'd expect in return is somebody with a first aid qualification, first aid kit, good knowledge of the area, decent alternatives and some mechanical know how/support.
I'm sure many on here fit the bill, but there is also a place for professional guiding.

It's not 25 a head though is it? It's only that if there are six of you, which there may not always be so it's 150 for someone to show you some tracks that only the slightest navigational skills would cover.

If we're going to list pointless things then I just spent more money on a bottle of wine than a whole day riding... Oh how bad I feel.

I pay unskilled labourers with zero overheads £150 a day. What do you think the guides should be charging thepodge? Nobody is forcing anyone to use them

Blimey, £150 a day? I'm sure there are plenty of people on here who'd help you out in exchange for a bit of banter and a slice of cake and some coffee. And when you say '£150 a day', it's not really is it, actually it's £750 for a five-day working week... 😉

A seasonal five day working week. Got to make hay while the sun shines I guess.

I must remember to tell my boss I don't like walking to work in the rain so he'll have to pay me more in the summer.

Or your boss will have to pay you more to retain you as work isn't guaranteed every day. If you can't work everyday asking more is normal. Guess some people don't get that, they key difference between casual and employed is if you turn up or not you get paid, but if your boss tells you not to turn up you do the get paid.

It's a fair price if you factor in things like insurance and travel.
I'd expect some form of coaching and general trail side education though.

I bet most guides have a "proper" job and this is a top up. Hell I'd live to do it.

Of course, you'd most likely be your own boss in this scenario. Add opposed to trying to stick it to da man.

Mildbore/Jekkyl....I've had to postpone our trip to the peaks as I got my shoulder badly smashed up in a june and I'm off the bike for a few more months yet. Operations and rehab going well, just not ready yet. Sorry about this, but I'll be back in touch when I'm mended.
