Hello. Been reading a long time but just registered cos I have a question. Hope someone can help...

I got some GT85 on brake discs and obviously they weren't too effective afterwards. However, I took the bike to top of a very steep long hill and hit the brakes all the way down in the hope of burning it off. It worked and the brakes are sharp again. Am I fine to put this down to experience and never EVER do it again, or could I have done some damage I'm not aware of?

Thanks for any help...

I would say that as long as none of the spray got to the piston seals, they should be fine. I'd remove the pads and clean behind them then refit, just to make sure. However, if it was a little bit of overdosed then you'll be fine.

They'll be fine. Some people would say you should have instantly replaced the pads and cleaned the rotors with isopropyl alcohol, but it's often not necessary.

They'll be reet. I once cleaned a contaminated rotor with washing powder after an overspray.

Always cover your discs with some old rags, before spraying the GT85. Isopropyl alcohol would save you having to burn off the oil.
If they work, then they'll be fine, if they don't bite as they used to, then you probably have contaminated the pads.. I go mad with the GT85, love the smell, forgotten to cover my discs before, they've been fine, after wiping them down.

Just make sure they aren't soaked in gt85 or other greases.

I do it more or less every wash, doesn't seem to be as much of an issue as some people make out. Maybe it depends on your definition of sharp.

as a related question, why are people using GT85? i'm not trolling or owt; just genuinely wondering what you use it for?

If you do it again just pour some clean water on the whole lot and brake a few times. Done in seconds.

Dunno now you mention it. I spray it on the chain after cleaning to get the water out, then wipe off the excess with a disposable nappy (very absorbent) and apply lube.

It's a water repellent so I use it after washing bike to get water off chain etc before I lube... Feel free to tell me I'm wasting my time!

nah, like i say, i wasn't trolling or anything, just interested! i never bother but then again i don't wash my bikes after every ride and when i do give them a thorough clean i tend to take the chain off and soak it in GT85 while i'm washing/relubing the rest of the bike. wipe off the excess, refit the chain then lube it up. that's me done.

I use it after cleaning to spray the cables. Squirt up the ferrules.
And my anodized frame looks nice with a quick wipe over with GT85.
