GRX mech... Awkward or what?

Had to change rear mech on my Tripster mk1 (traditional QR dropouts, traditional post mount brake), so bought a nice new Shimano gravel mech for decent money. Off came the slightly knackered Dura-Ace, on went the GRX 810. All fine.

Then I take the wheel out! I go to put it back in and the mech cage doesn't swing far enough out of the way. Have to awkwardly shift it into a low gear and push the mech inwards , which makes lining up the caliper bleedin hard, but get there. Study a youtoob vid of installing an 810 thinking I must've got the adjuster screws wrong or something... Nope, all fine..

Then I find a YT vid of a fella showing how to remove/refit the wheel (the ONLY video showing this) by PULLING THE CHAIN BACKWARDS?" and then fitting the wheel in reawardly and then up... WTF!? I mean all these years and years of putting rear wheels in and all this time it's been WRONG?!

What have I missed? It doesn't look any easier on the guy's flat-mount, thru axle bike!

I've got one on one of my bikes, I've never thought about doing anything special to remove/refit the wheel.

Had you pushed the clutch lever to Off first?

Had an 810, an 812 and an 822 on 3 different bikes. No problem with any of them when removing or refitting the wheel.

As above, are you switching off the clutch?

I've not had any problems with my GRX mech, but that's with thru-axle, not traditional QR dropouts.

As above, are you doing it with the clutch off?

Yep, clutch off, other wise it would be impossible!

The pivot on the hanger part has a bar across so it can't swing back past the cassette. I shall find evidence!

Here's the vid

Here's the normal mech being swung back behind the cassette

mech

Yet, the GRX only goes this far back, unless you push it inwards (to the bigger cogs)

No-one else has noticed?!

It might be your photo, but that doesn't look like it's fitted correctly.  The bit that links the mech to the frame should be more parallel to the chainstay, yours goes down rather than backwards.

Yes, I thought that Mister-P - but the tabs that go either side of the dropout only allow you to fit it as it is, I'm sure.

Will check again when I get home!

I compared it to this photo I took off the installation vid, and his runs more parallel to the chainstay too. hmm..

The tabs don't go either side, they both go on the same side.

Aha! Maybe I should've looked for that doc first. (I think this must've been an OEM sale by Merlin)

I'm going down to the bike shed to see if I have ballsed it 🙂

Yep, ballsed it! Thanks fellas. I  shall be much happier when I've sorted that and don't have to resort to (ahem) rear entry. 🙂

suspect you might find your shifting is improved somewhat too

At least there is something obvious and the fix is quick and easy.

Well, funnily enough no! Apart from the wheel replacement hassle, the shifting was perfect as it was. Now I've fitted the mech correctly the adjuster screws are out (weirdly) and shifting is rubbish. I didn't have enough time to sort it, so bike is still in the garage and I had to drive in to work today 🙁
