Sooooooo I’ve read a lot of posts over the years of people creak chasing so it is with great frustration I’m posting 😂
I noticed that whilst practicing wheelies 😊 in a low gear I’m getting a grinding noise that I think/thought was coming from the rear. Happens when pushing a bigger gear too on the downward (RL) push.
Bearings in the hub seem fine, I’ve swapped the freehub and then the bearings in the freehub. Pedals, QR all seem fine.
I’m going to try a different wheel tomorrow to rule out the wheel.
Confident it’s not the (HT) frame.
Could it be the spokes twisting? I’ve also not swapped the BB.
Could it just be my meat rockets generating too much torque?
Help!
Valve nut loose?
Cleaned and regreased cassette?
Chainring interface? Either bolts or cinch or whatever?
Confident it’s not the cassette as it’s been on and off a couple of times with no notable change.
I’ll check chain ring bolts.
I’m running a 34t ring so hopefully there isn’t any chain contact with the tabs but will double check.
Grr.
Years ago I had a creak on my Marin Wolf Ridge which took me weeks to resolve.
Solution:-
Removed the rear drop outs and applied a thin layer of grease between the drop out and frame contact surfaces before re-assembling.
In my experience of creak chasing over the years, it's very rarely where you think it is.
Some ones I have had are, derailleur bolt needed a dab of grease, rear or front axles, the side of the crank arm that is press fit in, bottle cage bolts being dry/seized, seat post.
It's just a process of greasing bolts and bits until it stops creaking not really any method.
Grrrr …. Creak chasing
in a low gear I’m getting a grinding noise that I think/thought was coming from the rear.
Creaking or grinding? If the latter I'll suggest a dry chain or worn drivetrain component(s).
Clutch on the your mech on? Try turning it off....
Is it the jockey wheel “just” touching the cassette when in the lowest gear?
Creak chasing for me this week-
Greased seat post and oiled chain.
I thought it was going to be a hub rebuild! I feel let off lightly.
Good luck finding your creak.
I had one a couple of weeks ago, from the bottom bracket area.
All stripped, checked, cleaned, reassembled. No effect.
Turns out whoever last adjusted the bars only tightened 3 of the four bolts properly, so my handlebars slipped.
Quick tweak with a torx wrench and the creak has gone.
Sooooooo it turned out to be the rear mech.
Well I believe it was!* I cycled the mech (specifically the clutch) manually giving it a bit more of a "stretch" than the gearing normally allows for - seems creak/grinding free now.
Thanks for the help and suggestions above 🙂
* I did also find chain ring bolts that needed a bit more of a turn but I don't think they were the problem.
