So I have a bit of a franken monster bike plan hatching in the shed of many random parts. I quite fancy the idea of putting gripshifts on drop bars, i've seem pictures on the web but they show the shifters on the end of the drops. I want to slide them up to the flat top section near the stem. The problem is I don't have any to try it and see if they will go round the bends, and I don't really want to order some to find out they wont!

Has anyone tried this?

I think you would struggle to get them round the bars, any particular reason you want to run gripshifts on drops? The only correct answers are heavy drinking or insanity 😁

Yeah the bends are the issue. I dunno, I just thought it would be different and to be honest I tend to ride on the flat part of the drops so it would work quite well for me I think

Also I have all components apart from shifters!

If you cut the bars in the middle you'll be able to get the gripshift onto the flat part of the bar, no bother. You'd just need to then make sure to tighten up the stem faceplate sufficiently to hold the two sides. Easy peasy.

Pop a set of these on, and add left and right gripshift to them.

You have no chance of getting grip shifts past the bends. They are of necessity a tight fit and will be at least 60mm long so you'd need an ID on the shifter of abut double what is there.

Either put them on the ends, or as above a set of tri bars.

I too am frankenbike curious. I think this could be a good solution! Not quite sure to what problem though.

Would the gripshift be the right ratio for the mech it is shifting?

Not sure you'd get them on at all, never mind round the corners, the straight bit of drop handlebars are a larger dia. than flat bars.

Bin dun! Well, not quite but Van Nicholas do a drop bar that breaks down into 3 parts; it's designed for Rohloff shifters though.

I tend to ride on the flat part of the drops

No point struggling to install them near stem then?

Use extended bar-end terminator, reduce it's outside diameter and us it as a sort of bar end grip shifter? Or use one of these accessories mounts that you can screw onto stem or bars, with little space for whatever you want.

Might be just right diameter for grip shift...

Cheers!
I.

I wouldn't dismiss the idea of having them on the ends of the drops. It looks like it shouldn't be, but is actually quite ergonomic. I prefer the arrangement to modern ergo shifters. They're also less prone to damage (or injuring your knees!) than bar-end levers.

Having said that, I'm old enough to have grown up with down-tube friction shifters, so reaching down to change gear feels quite natural and familiar.

As above, you do need to be aware of the bar diameter whatever approach you take. When I did it, I used a stub of cheap (and therefore thick-walled) flat bar filed/turned down to be a press fit in the end of the drop bar. A self-tapping screw under the bar tape made sure that it didn't move.

What about a bar end shifter?

I'm getting a vibe that it won't work! Although I do have a few sets of older drops that are a constant diameter or with short increase of diameter around the stem area

This was what I was thinking but obviously its not a grip shift

@kormoran why do you want to use grip shift?

I have a crazy idea that I want to use my salsa woodchipper bars that are on my shelf with some normal mtb shifters and brake levers and some broken sti shifters with all the gubbins ripped out and the levers removed just for the hand position.

It will probably be rubbish but when you've got an itch.......

@damascus it was largely as I had everything to build a monster cross type thing but I was short of shifters in my box of bits. I figured I might be able to use gripshefts instead of expensive STI's which I don't have either. (I have drop bar brake levers only). Plus all my bits are 9speed mtb which adds a bit more complexity I think

Plus I quite liked the weird look!
