So currently running a set of Continental Rubber Queens, find the front end hasn't got enough grip and gives me little confidence, was going to replace with a Schwable Magic Mary, any other suggestions? Off to the alps soon so want to make sure it's suitable for there too.
Cheers guys.
29x2.4 DHF Minion?
Yep, was going to suggest Minion DHF too - Magic Mary is a good choice also.
Yeah always ran Minions on the old 26er (RIP) with a High Roller in the back was always good option.
Anyone used the Specialized Butcher or Purgatory, seem to get fairly good reviews and pretty cheap at ~£30 compared to ~£50 for Minions or Magic Marys
I've ridden the butcher up front (27.5 and 29) and liked both
I really the the purg out back too, and the slaughter is proving to be good also
Mary has a lot less grip than a rubber queen in the dry ime, only really beats it in mud. Assuming you have a proper black chili rubber queen not oem shite anyway?
Northwind - that might be where the problem lies! They are not the black chilli ones 🙁
Purgatory is great in the UK once there's mud on the trail, but overkill in the dry. It's still grippy, but not as grippy as something with more knobs and lower profile.
This time of year I use WTB Bronson's but maybe they're not quite aggressive enough for DH/uplift, in which case I liked the Eskar which seems to have been replaced by the Butcher.
Very impressed with the Maxxis Shorty that I'm running up front.

Ah... The black chili ones are brilliant - much stickier and also manage to last ages. If you want something with even more front end grip than a Rubber Queen, try a Minion DHF or DHR2 3C - pairs really well with a RQ (aka Trail King) on the back.

Well that makes it easy. Fit anything else, it'll be better.
Save cash and get a 2.4 Chunky Monkey
If a 29er butcher is anything like a 26er clutch (well there's a qualification if there ever was one) then it's definitely very grippy and if you can get the sx casing strikes a nice midpoint between xc and dh in terms of pinch flat proofing and weight.
The downside is the clutch (and presumably butcher - same rubber?) is pretty slow rolling.
Schwalbe Hans Dampf - trail compound on the front. Brilliant tyres.
