Today i went out on a bike i use mostly in the summer. It was shod with 29 Nobby Nic tyres. In the dry it has always been fine.
Today in wet Snowdonia, every little rock step up had the rear spinning and me putting a foot down when i would normally clean.
My bike for slop has a MM front and an XR4 rear. I also have a Spec Purg and Butcher on another bike. So id like som
ething that deals with wet rock and isnt too draggy for big days out.
Any recommendations? Tubeless and cheap is good too!
Thanks
Ian
I switched from stock Nobby's in 27.5 to Minions front and rear (DHF DHR 2). Like you, in slop, the Nobby would just let go. Found the Minions excellent, and roll well enough. Grippy on slippy rock too.
Butcher elimimator/purg combo? Still very cheap on the spesh website

Lots say that the NN isn’t grippy in the wet. Why is this though? Tyre compound? spacing of lugs? what else?
I’ve found them to be ok for armoured trail centers!
Which version of the Nobby Nic have you got? The 'Performance' ones are rubbish in anything beyond slightly damp.
The 'Evolution' line are much, much better. I have used NN's on my full sus for the last 3 years without any problems: The old Evo Trailstar on the front and Pacestar on the rear.
Compound on Schwalbe makes a huuuge difference.
My OEM Marin Nobby Nic is like riding on on a waxed bowling ball when it's wet.
Mrs_oab's aftermarket uber_wunder_compound is really noticeably better, particularly on damp rocks.
Not that hard tbh. I really rate the DHR2 3C as a front, for anything up to full on wet tyre stuff. There's a 3C maxxterra and a 3c maxxgrip, the 2.4 maxxgrip is impressively grippy but it's also noticably slower, the 3c maxxterra 2.3 is a little draggier than a Nic but a lot better at everything else. Also tougher/more durable.
Thanks all. These are the cheap performance line tyres. I will check the recommendations 🙂

This is your problem. You are comparing apples with pears
I love my nn but I once made a mistake of buying a cheap performance tyre, it was terrible.
Currently running a 2.6 29er nn and they are amazing.
I've tried other tyres but I keep coming back to schwalbe

Then tbh there's probably a lot of sense in looking at the evo version. I mean, I wouldn't personally but if you've got on well with the performance ones then it's a big improvement to the evo, with no downsides apart from price so it's a decent match.
I would personally not do that like I say but then I'd not have lasted 5 minutes with the Performance nics so we're coming at it differently.
