Sat in traffic this morning* and my wandering mind started wondering what the most expensive by weight biking thing was that I had bought.

I don't have either the components or scales with me but currently top of my list would be (1) clear lenses for my Oakley Jawbreakers, which weigh almost nothing but cost £40 and then (2) a Shimano quick link that cost £6 and is probably so light it won't register on our kitchen scales.

I'm guessing small carbon or titanium parts might beat these. What do you reckon?

*Typing this once parked up, so don't worry!

No. No.  No.

As a bikepacker I refuse to play this game.

CX-ray spokes must come pretty close.

Edit. Scrap that, they don't even break the £1 per g mark.

Surely an engagement ring would come close.

Got a couple of Enve stems, they must be getting on for £3 per gram.

Looking into (but not bought yet) Berd spokes, 2.3g/$8 each.

Intend Corona seatclamp, 8g, £45ish (though, this pales into insignificance compared to a Tune Würger Skyline Seatpost Clamp, 5g, €79 rrp...)

I haven't looked to much into it, for fear of going broke, but I bet Hopp carbon stuff will have a few wins here... https://www.hoppcarbonparts.de/shop/sram-axs-upgrades/

I've heard EPO isn't cheap either 😉

It's probably something inconsequential like power links or something. I remember paying £90 for a hanger for my Cove Shocker that was painful.

Well... I once went on a pretty deluxe trip to Whistler, all told it cost me £3k or so, but that was nothing compared to the cost on the home front for the 'pass'.

It also cost me £1000 for the engagement ring, and then £9k for the Wedding. I might argue the £40k in child related costs afterwards... but maybe that's a stretch.

Dropping the kids off at the pool.
Buying some running trainers - and using them.

Saving bike weight? Nah, stuff loosing durability or function for a few grammes, when I can save so much from my body.

I never even wondered (even during the height of weight-weeniedom) ‘does anyone weigh their lenses?’

Now I can stop never even wondering!

Not really thought about weight-saved on gear since I gained so much on the bones. Yet since I lost a ti spork my outdoors-life has not noticeably suffered.

I wasn't really after weight weenie stuff, just wondered what we sort of casually spend without thinking about it, that actually is surprising when you do think about it!

Mileages vary. Low/zero budget for biking so other people’s needs and other household requirements usually suffer if I need to buy something for bike/s. Even an inner tube gets the uhms and ahhs,. I buy sports glasses if there’s a Lidl sale on. Aisle of Dreams!

When something’s (relatively) expensive such as £50-£60 light for example it took me two months to research/decide on one, and then buy it used from ebay if possible or look for sales online. I’ve found that selling stuff out of my old parts bin helps with stuff like innertubes or even tyres. Even in better times I’ve been a miser/conservative with the more expensive stuff, yet will even now impulse-buy endless little inexpensive gadgets.

USB dog fan? £4.99? NEED!

£130 on a pair of running shoes. I’ve lost 10kg since I starting running. Best bike weight saving ever!

Fair play. Funnily enough just about to order replacements for the broken laces in my walking boots for similar reason (lose weight, stay off bike) Expecting similar results 👍🏼

So, just weighed the spare lens for for my Oakleys. 12g for £40, so £3.33 per gram. That just pips a Shimano quick link which weighed 2g, for a £/g of 3.
At the Shimano Quick Link rate a 15kg bike would set you back £45,000.

The Richard Mille RM67-02, preferred timepiece of Bahrain McLaren cycling team & Julian Alaphilippe (so counts) is a mere 32 grams.

And costs $120,500.

Although I have just realised that my lens is the clear one. A replacement Prizm lens (presumably weighing all but the same) is £110 from Oakley. That's a £/g of 9.17.

I'd rather not get into details but let's just say that, when comparing the price per gram, the accompanying hookers were an absolute bargain in comparison.

EPO - (Eprex) in highest strength is £265 per 1 ml syringe. So about £265/g per dose. The microdoses so favored by cyclists are a much more reasonable £33/g. Allegedly.

My varifocal lenses in an Oakley Ti/carbon frame came in at 24g and £33.83/g, so more expensive than EPO

Ever lost a monthly contact lens while biking?

I think they cost more per gram than the space shuttle.
