Staying in Gt Hucklow over half term with the family. Will have 1 chance to get out on the bike for 5 hrs or so as Its a family holiday!!!

Where should I head for?

Supplementary question - can you kayak on Ladybower with your own kit or is it verboten

Head over towards Castleton and down Cave Dale or the broken Rd on Mam Tor. Head for Hope and you've got the classic Ladybower, Jacobs Ladder, Rushup Edge ride.

I think kayaking on Ladybower is definitely a no no. AFAIK the only place where canoeing is done is on the River Derwent at Matlock Bath (but I could be wrong)
