How much grease do you apply to a threaded bottom bracket ?
My hardtail has been making a creaking noise when I roll the bike from side to side, the BB was only 300 miles old. I fitted a new BB yesterday with a light touch of grease and still the creaking noise. I'm fairly certain the noise is coming from the BB as when shood on one pedal and rolling the bike left/right I can clearly hear the creaking. Should they be slavered with a decent amount of grease/anti seize ?
Try different pedals, grease crank bolts.
Push fit or threaded BB?
I'd be looking at the crank/BB interface or the pedals.
I put loads of grease on the threads of a bottom bracket. That's more about stopping it seizing into the frame than anything else.
Just a smear on square taper axles and a little bit of hollow tech or similar.
The only creaking I've had recently was a worn SRAM BB.
I had similar last year, tried new pressfit bb, chain, changed all frame bearings with no success, eventually found a tiny crack on the mech hanger/axle threads which was the source of the creaking, sorted with new hanger but I was 110% convinced it was coming from the bb/cranks at first
Thanks for the suggestions. It's a threaded bottom bracket. I will certainly investigate the Thru axle.
QR rear wheel? Tighten that if so. Fixed my creaking anyway (after being adamant it was BB and then headset).
I spent the whole of last winter trying to stop my bottom bracket from creaking. It ended up being a stem bolt.
If you really think it’s you BB, healthy smear of grease on the frame threads, and a layer of PFTE tape on the BB cup threads (don’t forget the reverse thread on the drive side).
I have the same problem on a threaded BB. I'm 90% sure it's the actual BB as I've swapped pedals, greased axles, tightened chainring bolts etc. However, while I have a Park Tool BB tool, I don't have a torque wrench and am a bit nervous about how hard to tighten the BB (I've not swapped any before). Any tips?
(It's a gravel bike that's done over a couple of thousand miles in less than a year so maybe the BB has actually died rather than got a bit dry.)
Check your chain ring bolts too
BBS can go in pretty tight. A good lean on the bb tool should be enough.
Check your headset. Sound travels through a frame in mysterious ways.
What forks have you got?
Just google creaking Fox forks, or look on youtube
How well did you clean the threads in the frame before putting the new one in? dab of Copaslip on the new BB threads and use a torque wrench to make sure its tight enough, beware cheap torque wrenches often don't work on LH threads.
