Why aren't they everywhere? BB shells, headset cups, pivot points, hub bearings etc.

WTB used to do a headset with them in which was pretty much everlasting because of it and my old pace forks had grease nipples to lube the bushings and seals which seemed to work well (about all that did on those forks).

Is this basically designing in a component lifespan or is the addition of grease nipples too expensive or something?

Don't know, seen some people modify hubs and the like, and I guess either cup and cone or cartridge bearings without seals would be the best bet. Would be nice to have the option though without Chris King levels of expense...

Because most things now use sealed cartridge bearings - so a grease nipple into a hub will just fill the shell with grease 😉

I've got a Banshee with them on the main pivots, makes sense until you try and find a gun that will work properly with them.

Turners have em. I had a couple of those wtb headsets worked well. SKF tell me "sealed for life" bearings don't need grease ports, hmm.

My Santa Cruz Blur has them in the lower suss link. Cant fault it!

Click the gun on, keep pressing until the nasty old grease comes out and new grease starts appearing. Job done. They use special bearings though which are designed for force fed grease applications.
