Any recommendations for a mid-level set of gravel/road wheels?
Must be:
- XDR freehub, as I'll be fitting Sram XPLR
- 100x12mm front, 142x12 rear
- 20-25mm internal
- alloy rims, unless a strong case can be made to spend more for carbon
I'd like serviceable hubs, so thinking Hope or DT 350 (or 350-based).
Budget is up to £600, probably
ta
must be somewhere around the mid tier DT wheelset? GR 1600?
tough old wheels, not anchors... aero spokes... been pleasantly surprised by mine on my digger after smashing them through stuff that i probably shouldn't be doing
I can highly recommend JRA (Just Riding Along) Monitors, mine have done over 3,000 miles on my Freeranger, mostly offroad and still straight as a die - well under budget.
25mm internal run tubeless with 50c tyres.
I picked up a set of Campag Levante carbon for 900 euro recently, stretching the budget a bit for sure, but they are really lovely things. Quiet hub, finish is lovely, nice and wide (25mm internal), light, seem really comfy to ride compare to my alu Hunts (the way they widen the tyre is a big part of that I'm sure).

ta. The GR1600 look okay but I'm struggling to find a XDR 700c rear. Merlin have a Shimano freehub pair on offer, so I could just swap freehubs.
Check the specs, some of the DT wheels include the XDR freehub, like this one
See text at the bottom: "Included: Tubeless rim tape 27mm, tubeless valve 32mm, SRAM XDR & Shimano HG freewheel body"
mmm
Hunt or Scribe, plenty of options in your budget
yer, DT's website says they come fitted with Shimano road hub, and XDR in accessories
I wonder what's the gravel version of the Hope hubs / DT rim custom MTB wheels that I like?
Hope Pro 5 now, and which DT rims are the equivalent of EX511/471 or XM481?
I can get a DT XDR freehub for £35ish, so the GR1600s at Merlin look strong.
Worth checking with Merlin, the XDR freehub should be included, but there's always the risk that they'd be an OEM version without it

XR361 rims with 22.5mm internal width, but I went with the 25mm internal XR391 on my gravel wheels in case I fancy trying much wider tyres. Only 30g between the rims. On Pro4s for me at the time.
I’m happy with my Hope 20five wheels using the RS4 hubs. Moonglu are listing custom Hopes on DT rims for £520. We’ve got spare XD drivers for DT hubs as our roval wheels came with them and we needed MS. Can sell you them if you need them.

Yeah they look great, what width tyres do you have now?

That's where I'd be spending my money.
Thanks. The Moonglu Hope+DT rim wheels look nice (but they won't let me add a XDR freehub, for some reason)
Merlin GR1600s only come with the Shimano freehub (they just emailed me)

Moonglu list it as an option, but you can’t seemingly select it. 🤔

Probably worth calling them.

Or PTCycles. Ahsat (my wife) has got some mtb wheels from them and they’ve been flawless.
many options:

I’ve got Hope Pro 5 hubs and DT GR351 rims with cx ray spokes, built by Moonglu.
Cost quite a bit, but feel great and have stood up to my 126kg over lumps and bumps on a Sonder Camino.

They're selling OEM sets, then.
Plenty of Euro sites with the proper ones.
Built mine with DT XR361, been very reliable and plenty strong enough, as they are basically unfashionably narrow XC rims.
The higher end DT rims have a lovely and very durable bead blasted finish and I love how well they build with the 'squorx' nipples.
Got 3 sets of self built wheels using that family of rims now.
DT's MTB XC rims are significantly lighter than there 'Gravel' rims too - which sacrifice weight for deeper aero sections. Don't know about you but I definitely don't go fast enough or care enough about Aero on my 50mm tyre gravel bike.
Yeah they look great, what width tyres do you have now?
50mm on xr391. I could easily have gotten away with xr361 like snotrag above, but the extra width allows me the option of 2.3/2.4 off I wanted.
I’m also liking DT Swiss rims in general: been gradually replacing with them when necessary. EX471/511 on big bike, XM421 on trail FSer (and soon to be on my HT). Lovely to build with.
The reason the DT gravel rims are heavier than the XC race rims is that they're reinforced to handle the long term use of higher tyre pressures, which put a lot of force on a rim and can reduce its fatigue life.
They also have a higher weight limit (130KG vs 110).
Worth baring in mind if you are planning to run slicks at higher pressures or do a bit of bikepacking down the line.
I built some XR391 rims onto DT 350's, bought all bits from R2 bike for just over £300*. Shimano freehub though. Got 2.4 & 2.2" tyres on them.
*Multiple orders to avoid extra fees.
