... and don't cost a small mortgage!

My WTB Resolutes are wearing out, they've been good as all-rounders but always pretty hopeless in mud.

I'd like the WTB Raddlers (in 45c flavour), but not flush enough to fork out £90 for both ends.

So, I'd like something cheaper, in 700x42+ flavour, that rolls well but does have a bit of extra bite in the mud, and comes in under £35 each.

Vittoria Terreno Mix..? They do only go up to 38c though but do roll very well yet also very good in mud - I have a pair.

(The TNT version is £40ea but easily available for less; my LBS does all tyres buy one get one half price.)

^ agreed Nanos aren’t the worst, especially if the mud has something grippy under it/is not too deep. I was quite surprised at their versatility.

Rock n Road 700 x 43 have more tread than most gravel tyres. Available from PX for £30.

Except ... Most CX tyres are 32/33/35c whereas I'm after something rather wider.

As above Rock'n'Road are a good all round tyre with a decent depth of tread.

Another vote for 40c Nano's. Seen versatile enough for a bit of road work followed by nice gloopy mud 🙂

Smart Sam 42c?

I'm guessing at that price, they are wire bead, nasty plastic, and non tubeless?

I’ve been using 40c Nanos also. They’re not bad in the mud but need a bit of care with the front wheel as they do tend to slide easily on muddy cross cambers.

I've just fitted some Pirelli Cinturano M in 45mm - certainly chunky enough and make my Riddlers look a bit weedy - but they're a hefty £45/end. I'm on The Speyside / Cairngorms border - there's no way I'd venture into the country with a pair of CX tyres, far too fragile.

I've just bought a pair of Vittoria Terrano Mix in 38mm from Lordgun, never used them before but their prices look really good, so much so that I bought a pair of tubes, another pair of 27.5+ tyres for my Stooge and some sticky bar tape. They'll keep me busy when my current tyres finally wear out.

Surly Knard 700x41c. kind of basic tyre but they seem to work really well for me in mud and still roll well on hard/asphalt, and only about 30 quid. insanely hard-wearing.
