Shock horror my Boardman ADV rear rim (that came with the ADV bike) has a nice tasty split in the sidewall by one of the spokes. I'm guessing the Formula CX22 hub is due a service too so while I could put a new rim on there it might just be more economical to replace the lot(?)

Can you recommend me a sensible rear wheel?

  • intended use is the roadier end of the gravel spectrum - 70% tarmac 30% fire roads, 38mm tyres though might go slightly narrower one day
  • Also though bearing in mind I was a bit annoyed with the previous wheel needing a spoke replaced every 2-3 rides, so maybe need something stronger? I'm not light myself and sometimes tow trailer / carry luggage too
  • Not too pricey, as it's my runaround bike, alloy not carbon

Help me hivemind 🙂

DT Swiss G 1800 or GR 1600 are not the blingiest but they are rock solid wit a high weight limit and you'll be able to get spares for them long into the future.

Recommend what you've got... Hunt 4 Season works well for me, never any problems. Customer service has been good too, and if you do run into problems they seem keen to help.

That said, not sure if you can get just a rear; they seem to sell pairs.

I'd start by looking for DT bargains, as Hatter suggests.

But give me a shout if you'd be interested in a reasonably priced set of Superstar V6/Arc Ultra wheels.

I had them on my gravel bike and they were great, but switched to something wider for my 45mm tyres late last year.

Dt swiss if you can find in your price range

Hunt are value.

The less fancy end of just riding along handbuilts (core range) might also be worth looking at.

Having just gone through faff with a rear wheel and some damaged hubs of my sons, whatever you can get service parts for.

That means for me Shimano, DT or Hope. Nothing else.

I have nice new XT hub being built into my barely used rim as we speak by LBS.

Thanks folks. Do I have to go up to 24mm internal width to get the extra strength? I'm quite happy with how the 19mm ADV handled.

I'd be looking at JRA MAP Core, in 32H flavour, you can have a rear for £155.

Bit more backup and if strength is your worry, higher spoke count is generally the thing to go for.
