You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
My Kinesis CX V4 wheels have gone into the shop for a replacement spoke and nipple and true up and I've just been told it isn't worth it as i have the start of cracks around about half the rear spoke holes and a couple on the front too.
What are people's recommendations for replacements (rebuild on the hubs will be almost as much as a new wheelset anyway)
Disc braked, self adjustable axle systems, for gravel and road but nothing too severe, and suitable for a man who shops at the far end of the clothes rack.
I have some Primes on my road bike, seem decent enough so far but they don't seem to have a gravel set. Hunt any good? That sort of scale - £200-300, but if there is good for less I'd listen.
Primes do disc option too. Wide enough rims for cx tyres.
I am a gentleman of similar proportions (assuming it's the XXL end of the clothes rack).
I have some Mavic Aksiums, which have been absolutely fine for regular duties and can now be had for £150 or so. I did have one set where I damaged the hub using the wheels for some off-road excursions. Mavic warrantied them though, so you'll more than likely get a couple of years use for your money.
For more rowdy shenanigans and riding with a bikepacking load, I had my LBS build up some 32 hole Hydra rims on DT Swiss 350 hubs, came in at about £380.
I've been using Hunt wheels for the past couple of years on my road bike and CX/gravel bikes with absolutely no issues. The Mason x Hunt wheels are a decent price and weight as well as being fairly strong.
Not sure Hunt are ideal for us chunky types,l, to quote thier website on the Mason x Hunt model:
"100kgs is the upper recommended rider weight limit for these wheels. Please include the weight of any luggage in your total rider weight when choosing the correct wheels. If a rider is over 90Kgs then an experienced bike mechanic should check the wheel regularly"
How heavy are you? DT do the C1800's which have a 130KG limit, if you're bigger than that I'd go handbuilt.
The new mavic open pro disc brake rims look good. Ask you lbs if they can build you a 32 spoke set of wheels for your budget?
You might have to source the hubs, novatec or superstar or 2nd hand hopes.
Or you could look in the classifieds for some awesome American classic 32 spoke disc hubs! 🙂
105kg here using DT Swiss 511 built onto Hope RS4s with 32 spokes, seem to be holding up to my abuse fairly well.
I put these on my Jake a couple of months ago to replace the conspicuously heavy standard items.
They are suiting me fine.
These are 24 spoke and I weigh just shy of 15 st.

Just built some DT R 500's up on some old Pro 2's I had knocking around from the pre-boost days. Came out a treat. Nice and wide rims for 40mm tyres.
