I've been thinking of making a mongrel bike for a while out of my 19 and a bit year old 26er (currently family ride duties, has been delayed by using a macride on it so drop bars not being an option). Basically this would be 100mm travel drop bar 9 speed hardtail.

It's struck me that I quite fancy putting some wider tubeless gravel tyres on the commuter, which would give that some off road capability too.

The old MTB will take bigger tyres and has suspension forks, but 26.8mm seatpost means a dropper will never be an option.

If I used the commuter it would free up a bit of garage space, but I'd need to keep the bracket for the (cheap, agriculturally constructed) tag along on it. Also I sometimes have the old MTB primed with ice spikers for commuting if the weather looks a bit iffy.

I think I'm still of a mind to use the old MTB, but should I? I might end up doing both but my garage isn't infinitely big, and either way the commuter will still be there.

scrap them both, get down to Sprockets, buy a new genesis Fugio with 650 x 47 tyres and a dropper 🙂

Oh, and don't tell Tina 🙂

This old thing, Tina?

To be honest I think that'd be fairly close to using the commuter. Maybe I could build up some 650b wheels for maximum clearance but I think I quite like running mudguards, well I definitely like them on the commute!

Also I'm terrible at moving on old bikes. I might force myself to give one to BfR this year perhaps.

^^^^ LOL. If I get back on a bike this year I reckon it'll be a Fugio 30 🙂

I may sell the Bird Zero TR though..

I re-built my old 26" MTB for this very reason, including some CX-style tyres, thinking I would make myself a "gravel-ish" bike. I have since never used it, sticking to my commuter with its regular road tyres and all the assorted brackets for luggage and kids, and one of my regular MTBs for, you know, MTB-ing. I can't bring myself to get rid of the old bike, as it's my first MTB. Maybe it will come in useful one day.
