Im looking to buy a gravel bike and over the winter its primary use will be on my trainer with zwift. I don't think I'll ever ride it outside until the weather picks up and its primary use will be on the trainer.
After trying Zwift with my MTB being 1x11 its not ideal and was considering getting a cheap road bike but this would never get used outdoors as im not a fan of road riding so idea was to get a gravel bike with the idea of using it off road once the weather picks up and not just a trainer bike.
For the past few days ive been on the lookout for a gravel bike budget being 1k max.
Is there anything out there better than this from CRC? This seems pretty decent for the price but can i do better?
Thanks
Apart from the mechanical disk brakes, which are really expensive to upgrade to hydraulic if you are so inclined, that looks fairly decent.
In the spirit of recommending what you own, I got a second hand Boardman ADV 8.9 off eBay cheaper than that and barely used.
You seem to be going from one 1x11 bike to another 1x11 bike?
What are you trying to achieve by going to the gravel bike rather than the MTB?
1x11 on a gravel bike will be fine for the turbo, you’ll want at least a 40 tooth chain ring ideally. Most mtb setups will be around the 32 tooth.
The one you link to has a 42 tooth so will be fine. Mine is a 42 on the front and while it’s great on the road, on technical steep climbs I’d prefer a 38…..I don’t like grinding and use my gravel bike more off road than on.
In terms of the CRC bike though, personally I can’t stand Avid BB 7 brakes. Really didn’t get on with them, constant case of needling adjusting before going out. Some people like them, me, not so much.
As above poster mentioned, I’d be looking at second hand with that budget. Or possibly extend the budget and look at the Planet X offerings, for example….10% of everything so that would be about £1350.

Yeah i did want that Rujo as they were under 1k leading up to Christmas but i thought about it too long and they went back up which im kicking myself about.
PX's prices are up and down so i might keep an eye on that even though i doubt it will get under £1000 again.
With regards the MTB on the trainer im running a 32t ring which ive been using but its no good and far too low. The octane ive linked to above has a 42 so id of thought it would be ok.
I have;

In sale it was £1050 with £50 back on CashBack. First big ride today and good fun.

Not strictly ‘Gravel’ but Ribble are still doing the CX AL for £999 with Apex hydraulic. I’ve been racing one this year and it’s been excellent, unlike me! I’ve had 40mm tyres in there with no issues albeit filetread not heavy knobbles. That’s gravel enough for me.
After trying Zwift with my MTB being 1×11 its not ideal
While I’m never one to discourage someone from n+1… what do you mean by ‘not ideal’ on Zwift? Not ideal because of the range of gears? If so, just drop the ‘trainer difficulty’ setting to 20 or 30% and you’ll find you hardly have to change gear.
Hmm I might try that thanks. Tbh I've never played with the settings but yeah when I say not ideal I mean I'm running out of gears and spinning like a mad man.
Also depending on your cranks there are 38/40/42 104bcd rings on eBay and Amazon.
But if gaps between ratios is the problem then try an 11 speed road cassette on your MTB -the ratios are closer together.
Get that Vitus if they have your size left. Unbeatable spec for the price.
I recently got a Boardman ADV 8.9 cheap secondhand and tarted it up for a few hundred less, it's great - but I'd have happily bought the Vitus if it was available at the time.
Yep that vitus is amazing for the money
Just above budget but I was in our local Decathlon a few days ago and they had one of these on display....

I've this very bike.
It's at the road end of gravel spectrum in tyre width and gearing.
It's light, great wheels, good spec and is lasting well after 2 years of commuting, touring and gravel.
Mine doesn't have the correct fork mounts for mudguard - missing the top hole and the leg inserts are in backwards. I've compared to other Merlin's I've seen and it's a lottery as to what mounts you have...poor QC.
Kaffenback?

Mechanical disc brakes again, I’m afraid. I’m not sure you’ll find many hydraulics for under £1000 at the moment.

That was going to be my suggestion too, unless you need 2x for Zwifting(?)...

I bought one before Christmas to use as a commuter and for occasional off road use. I'd not even consider mechanical disc brakes so this seemed ideal with Sram Apex. It's got loads of clearance for bigger tyres and proper guards too.
personally I would buy the cheapest one and change a few things. The frames are going to be basically the same for the higher end model. 105 hydro groupset is going for £450 on CRC. You would get that and buy a bike for £550. I bought a road bike instead of a gravel bike. lighter and if I want to go offroad I'll use my mountain bike. My prerequisite was hydro brakes and 2x (1x suck for ratios on gravel bikes). Like others have said hydro brakes under 1k is going to be difficult. 200 miles in 5 weeks with a mixture of road and indoor riding. using the free wahoo RGT so no zwift payment.
However if you are just going to be using it inside why bother buying one if you are using another bike? what are you wanting to achieve with it? If it is just for the trainer then a cheap ass halfords or decathlon road bike will do the job as you don't need hydro brakes for a trainer.
