anyone got a Granite Stash Ratchet - What threads is the the bolt.

I have a carbon fork closed steerer fork (alu steerer) - Id like to run a stash but it comes with a bolt through clamp system extolling the lack of use of a Star nut .

What thread is the bolt that bolts into the lower half that inserts from the bottom of the steer - anything stopping me sinking the star nut deep and securing to that instead ?  it doesnt interact with the spring or anything does it ?

Is the clamp system just to save average joe from screwing up the star nut install ?

I think by the time it reaches the insertion depth, the diameter of the steeer is wider, so the star nut would simply fall out.

possibly... I've not tried... But looks that way.

fair point and it seems thats exactly why they have done it that way

My bikes not a Gnarpoon and im not short so  i have a 200mm steerer with only 40-50mm tapered section the rest being at 1 1/8th

Ratchets listed as 92mm so looking at the below photo the orange caddy is in the region of 120mm Total length

Looks like ill have to take a run out to twenty20 with my fork and see how it lies in the real world.

Yep - it's definitely too long for most forks, for a star nut to work. You may get away with a small compression fitting of this type of you've a really long steerer tube on an endurance style bike.

But I wouldn't want to use it in a sealed fork where it could get lost at the bottom.

nothing special about the bolt, cap head bolts which comes with three lengths to suit different steerer lengths.

they do the RCX for bikes with closed tube steerers.

Was aware of the rcx but that fails the tool usability test 🙁

Yeah I wouldn't want to use one of those expander in a closed for either. Would feel better pulling the star nut out again than trying to retrieve that if it hit the bottom

I can measure mine when I get home if you want/I remember.

How so?

Would a one up edc work? Be that threading the steerer or the threadless carrier (or possibly the stem but I think that's discontinued)

The tools just of a size that it will be awkward to use for access on some of the bolts ill be possibly be needing acces too and poor leverage. Ive been down that ultra small ultra light path before and its not a path i want to travel again 😀

The full bhuna EDC would work although longer tooling than the RDX still quite short - but comparible to the stash RT

The further thought occurs that if the star nut does end up in the taper .... i may just bond it there.

Turn the OD of the existing nut flange down, add some epoxy to it, glue it to the inside of the bottom of the steerer. Align with some threaded bar.

Assuming your steerer isn't actually too long...

I take it here the issue is that the physical size body makes it difficult?

Bit length on the ratchet is shorter than even my teeny tiny multitool  so reach is worse.

In terms of leverage I'd not be trusting the ratchet to take as much as any multitool either. My tiny tool is about 45mm long when closed, opened out so the tools on the other end extended the handle its closer to 80mm, that's a bit shorter than the ratchet driver but it doesn't have a mechanism to fail like the ratchet tool does. It's also ample to do/undo any bolts i might need to. What on earth are you needing that amount of leverage for on the trail?

Rode out to twenty20 at the weekend where i could get my hands on the granite RCX , RT and the one up offerings.

The ratchet tool is significantly more ergonomic - its more the bulk of the rest of the tool being folded in about that causes issues getting in than directly the length. - I usually have a hexus which get round that by having longer tools.

FWIW a quick offer up showed that my thoughts of fitting the star nut deep was going to work - and a few taps with the persuader and we have an Granite stash RT fitted

Nice bit of kit - danger of going to the shop is i now have the barstash chaintool and tubeless doofer - Coupled with a mountain morph fitted inside the rear triangle i'm covered for most things.
