I guided in Verbier for a season and we used to get people coming out to race this. Always seemed like a bit of a waste of a good holiday to me - many of them would come for a week and pretty much just do the race, nothing else. Saving themselves before the race, too knackered afterwards. Still, each to their own, and good luck if you do it. Verbier is stunning, with probably the best natural singletrack I've ridden anywhere, including BC. The folk who know it inside out are www.bikeverbier.com

A long, long, time ago.... guys I knew did it first weekend of a week with BV (one on a G-Spot!) they said that there were a LOT of Euro riders who flew up the non tech climbs and minced anything downwards. They all went on to ride all week with BV, despite a chalet shitting episode... They were all very fit.

Yeah and I'll be back again this year. I tag it on to holidays though, I nearly flew out to last years on it's own due to a a couple of changes in plans but when I actually worked out how much it was costing to do a four day trip just for the race I just gave up the entry fee.

It's a great event, really well organised and brutal.. but awesome to complete and a lesson in how fit the quick guys are. Verbier isn't cheap no, but it's only for a couple of days. You can stay in Sion and get a lift up, but it's a bit faffy and still not cheap, there is a couple of campsites on the valley floor.

You might find some accommodation in one of the other start points, Nendaz or Heremence are good for a first time at it - the full route is a big big day out. Verbier is much better set up for the accommodation though so I don't think you'll save a lot staying elsewhere.

Definitely one to do once! I agree with the above though, there's so much more to the area so definitely make a trip of it, and don't just stick to verbier the other 3 valleys have miles of totally quiet singletrack to explore.
