Back in the 80s they were the only choice for grips on my mtb and touring bike. Whilst rummaging in the shed yesterday I checked out the grips on my '88 Stumpjumper and my '89 Elvis. One the trad round type, the other the new improved pyramidal type with the bulge in the middle. The grips hadn't deteriorated in any way.

So why did they fall from favour?

I had them on my touring bike. Really comfortable but they used to wear through pretty quickly.
