does anyone know of a website to search and download gpx files for free?

I know komoot and strava have them but are behind a paywall.

I've used gpsies in the past which now looks to be alltrails https://www.alltrails.com/

What are you looking for, edge cycle works have a few good ones.
Mtbr ones are also readily available.

Remember that Komoot also gives you one free region so you can try it out.  I've found it the best of the sites when I'm visiting a new area although it can also get it wrong - i've been blocked on routes before

If you like it you don't even need to do the subscription thing, just buy the regions that you need

Is the one I use. You can search by keyword or location. It's also a pretty dam good route builder to generate gpxs. You can build a route using os mapping and if you switch to hybrid it shows you Footpaths that are on the ground and where the Stiles are. It's great.
