As above.

I am getting a bit paranoid about junior's new bike being half inched so fancy getting something I can slip into his bike, like the handle bar or seat tube that lasts at least a few months without needing to be charged.

Can anybody recommend owt?

Many thanks,

Christian

The tracking bit is 'fine' but you'll need some kind of data package so it can update an online resource if it is stolen...Otherwise why has a GPS track if you can't see it?

If you can find a device a free freedom pop SIM would handle the connection.

Aye but that is going to seriously drain the battery of the device...so it will need charged more frequently, so will need to be easy enough to get access to (which might also make it easier to get rid of).

There is a service that you register your bike with and you stick some codes on your bike, it can be scanned by people with the app on their phone (like the police and anyone else who has it installed) and it can show if the bike is stolen or not...can't recall it now, but it is a tenner per bike.

You get the stickers, stick to bike, scan and register your bike, then if it does get stolen, you can report it on the app and it immediately flags to anyone else who then scans the bike - sounds a good idea and I cna't remember it now...

Are you worried about it going missing from the garage/shed, or just generally going AWAL from the park when Jr forgets to bring it home?

^^ this. The amount of times I see kids just dump their bike and run off somewhere for ages, it's no surprise they get nicked.

I bought my lad a second hand bmx for knocking about on. Won't be happy if it got nicked but it's much more replaceable than his mtb or road bike!

I guess the use case is i am worried about it getting on pinched while out and about .If it does i would like to be able to track/find it.

It is locked away secure overnight.

Maybe was to perscritive in the OP.

Considered buying a cheap run around but don't have the space .

What about a Tile?  https://www.thetileapp.com/en-gb/how-it-works

Could stick it down the seat tube. Works up to 100ft connected to one device, so would mean youd have to be in the vicinity of the bike to know where it is...

Or what about one of those tiny phones prisoners smuggle up their bum?

You can actually register for free ... and they sell different kits.

Personally I wouldn't do it as they share the information with the police even when it's not stolen and from what I understand any officer can log-in and see what bikes you have at your address.

This seems about as bright to me as posting your holiday location on FB with a photo of your bikes at home and a big sign saying "shed key under mat"...

those two scenarios are not even remotely similar in the real world.

Similar to tile, but with replaceable batteries, take a look at Trackr

There are multiple risks with this ... it's a prepared database of expensive bikes!

There are very limited advantages ... in that someone has to find your bike and scan it... but that doesn't seem like such a advantage over the frame numbers and/or permanent marker on plasticised paper inside a tube with your postcode.

1) A bent copper sells this information to a criminal (or employee but in terms of numbers the odds go with a bent copper)

2) By having this information available and live (as opposed to only available for stolen bikes) someone hacks in and sells this information.

The recent bikeshop break-ins have shown that expensive bikes are on the radar of well organised criminal elements.... and IMHO having that information live is inherently risky.

I wouldn't recommend Trackr - utterly useless in my experience
