Hi, we generally tend to ride our local trails and trail centres but would like to branch out and ride trails further afield. I think GPS route mapping may be the way forward. Have you guys got experiences / tips to share on which units are best for bike riding?

Google gives many hard sell advertising rich options for the fat walleted types. I don't mind spending a bit of money for a good practical and useful solution but don't want to part with money and find a better option. Any ideas chaps?

Get some OS maps and a couple of good mtb guide books. Pour a beer. Spend the evening planning.
(Viewranger on phone, with free online account, and old black and white £10 gps). But most of the time it is maps. You need one as back up anyway.
If you can't read a map, spend what you would have on a gps on a training course.

Bikehike for planning, etrex 30 for the unit. Only just got my etrex 30 but used it a few times now and its been faultless, along with the bikehike online software, all very nice. I do agree with matt about having a map as a back up, especially if you live in the area, useful for all sorts.

Thanks Guys,

Looking into those.

Matt you talking good old paper OS? I'm old enough to remember when there was no alternative! However, I like the idea of finding classic routes from around the UK, think High Street / Howtown loop, down loading to device and off for the day / weekend. If it gets messy I've got enough mountaineering experience to get me off a hill safely. Then get a beer...

There's a good article in yesterday's Guardian about the demise of paper to digital. "Ordnance Survey paper maps are under threat from digital devices. Rachel Hewitt celebrates an 'icon of England' beloved by generations of hikers, poets and artists."

I use bikehike....

is there any way of changing start / end points on a loop without completely redrawing the loop?

Good lad. Mines a pint.

In which case, spare phone batteries and view ranger app and free account. Sorted.

Hey Matt,

Just walked myself through viewranger, looks perfect. Cheap to begin using, (as in free), option to purchase digital OS and / or print .pdf of map.

Thanks Mate.
