Is anyone able to recommend a good app for recording rides on an old smart phone. I've inherited a HTC Desire S and it is running Android 2.3.5 and won't let me install strava.
What I was hoping to do is find an app that will record rides and then let me sync (simply) with Strava when back on wifi. I'm not interested in all the analysis stuff on the phone as currently I use a garmin and look at it on my PC. This is mostly out of curiosity as I'll probably still use my garmin 99% of the time.

Not used it, just googled "simple gpx logger android"
Wahoo fitness works well. Not sure about android version though.
Also, Google MyTracks will record and then export GPX.
I've used gpstracker in similar circumstances
The tracks are a bit wayward sometimes but TBH I suspect the old phone more than the software
I used to use Google MyTracks on my HTC Desire and it worked fine.
As above, I think you can export as gpx.
2.3.5 is getting on a bit now. strava used to crash all the time on my desire S, as did mapmyride. endomondo was mostly stable, but i think it was the battery that was the biggest issue in the end.
there's a website called tapiriik (might be a different arrangement of i's there) that makes it handy to sync rides between several popular sites like endomondo, strava, etc. or even sync so every ride gets archived on dropbox. useful if you have to use an app different to the one you usually use.
I record my runs on runkeeper. When I get home, I use the PC version to download a gpx.

Last year I inherited an HTC Wildfire. It's actually pretty easy to change the Android version if you're a bit geeky, with lots of help and custom versions of Android (up to around 4.4.4) available on the XDA forums http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-desire
However, Strava isn't officially supported on CyanogenMod or other non-official versions of Android. On the Wildfire (using CyanogenMod 10 or 11) I found that the latest Strava version doesn't work, so I'm still using the previous version.
I use Viewranger on my stripped back Samsung Galaxy. Never given me any problems. Not sure if it can sync up with Strava or not though but you can export GPX. files from Viewranger so I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Alpine Quest. It is the only app I have on my phone. Use it for all my navigation (using Memory Map 1:25K OS maps imported from my PC). You can load it up with any map you like (like OSM or Google maps) or even aerial photos (Bing) by going on line at home and storing areas of interest, or you can store whole map files in the QCT format on an SD card if you happen to have them on your PC already. Just open app, start the thing tracking at the start of a ride. It will plot your route and show you exactly where you are in real time. It will display a route for you too if you plan one in advance and load it up as a gpx file. Handy for finding those cheeky sheep track routes you can see on Google Earth but can never find on the ground. At the end of the ride, stop the tracking and save track as a gpx file. Connect to PC when you get home and open strava, go to upload activity, from file, and navigate to the folder on the phones memory/SD card where the gpx file is saved, et voila. It is imported to Strava and job done. I have never lost a ride doing this whereas when I used the Strava App on the phone it was forever losing stuff or corrupting rides (always the best ones with the potential KOMs on them too 😉 )
I rate this App very highly as you can tell.
Welshfarmer. Have you noticed that OS maps stopped working on Alpinequest this week?! Same in Maverick app too. It's even overwriting cached OS maps.
Guess OS have tightened up on licencing.
MapMyRide is pretty good.

Someone was mentioning that MOBAC (Mobile Atlas Creator) OS Mapping stopped working very recently. MOBAC was getting its OS map tiles from Bing Maps (and Bing Maps still has OS mapping) so they've changed something. I was looking into it last night and looked like the URL had changed and it should be possible to work around it (in MOBAC). More investigation reqd.

As I pointed out on that other thread, the OS now have their own App in Beta testing. I'm guessing that the two facts are not unconnected.
Nope, the maps still work with Alpine Quest. Not sure if there might be an update at some point that stops me using them but I don't think so. However, the maps I use are older ones (MemoryMap 5 IIRC) and are the relevant OS 1:25K sheets I have had on the computer for years. I guess if you are caching OS off the internet then OS are able to add code that stops them being used by 3rd party apps. The old maps in qct format seem to be pretty immune.
Strava USED to run on my Android 2.3.6 phone, does the Play store not let you download an older working version?
