My 4th Garmin has just died in about 8 years. Nothing exceptional just riding in all weather. Iwant to replace it but damned if they are getting any more of my money for defective products
What else are people using? I want colour mapping for MTB, road and walking. Heart rate, cadence, power through ant + and some sort of robustness. Long battery life of more than 10hrs word help too.
Wahoo roam?
The Satmap units are good for walking / general mountain use - Ordnance Survey maps, great screen, mostly easy to use, but very expensive and bulky. Also not great on the road where you really want turn by turn mapping. I've got a Wahoo Elemnt for that and it works pretty well, the new Roam is more of the same but with better nav and a colour screen. The Elemnt sort of works for mountain biking if the trail is marked on Open Street Map, but useless on most footpaths and with no topographical / Ordnance Survey mapping option I think.
Not sure any of that's much help. It's pretty hard to find a unit that's good for road riding and walking tbh. Something like ViewRanger or the OS app on a smartphone in a waterproof case works pretty well as an alternative to a dedicated GPS unit for occasional walking use / back-up to a paper map.
Wahoo roam, or if the mapping is lacking a bit on that, maybe the new Stages colour models could be worth a look. Not looked into them too much tbh.
What model Garmins have you used?
Something like the Etrex may be more robust than the Edge, and better battery life. The Etrex 32x should work with heart rate and cadence sensors, but not power.
Garmin Oregon. They're designed to be robust for the Outdoor market.
Have you tried contecting Garmin they replaced my out of warranty Vivoactive for free when it broke.
I might get a couple of devices. Off road I only want maps and on road where I want the performance data I need the maps less.
Yeah I've had one replaced for free by Garmin. Current challenge is I'm on a six day ride in the Alps and my 1000 gave up after a thunderstorm. I don't know how they get their waterproof ratings but I've known others have them die after a bit of rain.
Anyone got the Hammerhead Karoo?
