Hi all,

Likely to start travelling a lot and it is always nice to have a bimble on the bike where possible.

Question is, what is the best approach to getting maps for Europe on my Garmin Edge 800 that will make off road rides as fool proof as possible in new and foreign lands?

OS maps are great in the UK but I'm assuming something like Open Street Maps are the best option but I'm wondering what else might be out there. I'm relying on Garmin Connect, Strava and Google Street View for route inspiration and pre ride planning and having a a reasonable map for during the ride would be pretty helpful.

Any ideas?

Ta!

openstreetmap are pretty thorough now. certainly are around here.

get mine from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl (iirc that's the link)
can either get a complete country in one go, or make a custom map, selecting the tiles you want/need (I tend to do a custom one).

Thanks Andy. I noticed that link when googling and it does look like the best option.

I use https://sites.google.com/site/openfietsmap/

It's based on the openstreet map but the routing is cycling biased (although that may only be beneficial for road riding and maninly in Belgium / Netherlands)

As well as Benelux I've used Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland without any problems.

Talkytoaster will do you a map with contours and extra detail of certain areas by request

That is all really helpful, thank you!

Contours would be nice to know when the gradients are coming while following the planned route (without having to switch screens) 😀
