Ideally (in no particular order):
~ cheap
~ attaches to stem (take up less room on bars)
~ Garmin (all my others are)
~ interface with PC to upload routes
~ integrated battery (when I use my Etrex it switches off on rattly descents, presumably due to batteries losing contact)
~ cheap
~ basic navigation (follow a trail, not display maps)
~ basic bike computer stuff (distance, av speed etc)
~ cheap
Edge 205/305
+1
Are they cheap?
(is there a 105?)
Edge is great. Prices have come down as the 605/705 is out now. You'd likely get one 2nd hand from an upgrader.
Stick with your etrex I reckon - mine never loses battery contact even on really rattly cx stuff - maybe your springs have got bent? And it can be stem mounted with a bit of bodging and is perfectly secure.
Battery on my Geko would occasionally but out. I put a thin piece of foam on the inside of the battery cover and it's been fine since.
Hmmm... foam's not a bad idea.
I've previously used a rolled up bit of paper to get the battery cover to fit more snugly and that works off-road. I've had the same problem with both my Etrex (an old one and a new shaped colour one) and they both work fine off-road but not on my road bike - I guess that shows my forks are working at least!
I used one of those little sticky foam pads you sometimes get with bike helmets
i use a 205 with the stem mount - perfect.
