Looking for a GPS hand held for using while walking, biking and geo cache with the kids. I'd like one with the OS type maps built in.

The Oregon 600 seems to fit the bill and there are a few offers about including 1:50 GB maps. Is that a good bet?

Thanks

In summary, yes.

It's what I use so I might be biased, but I like the touch screen interface, the decent sized screen and the fact that you can customise the display for various activities (incl. geocaching).

Get the GPSmap 64. The Oregon will drive you nuts the first time you try to use it with gloves on. The GPSmap is considerably faster, includes TOPO maps of the UK and differential GPS support out of the box.

Have you considered an app like viewranger? I use it quite a lot and have paid for the OS maps on it. Comes in very handy when in the thick of the woods and you can use offline if you have the maps previously downloaded. Obviously the negative of this is issues like battery consumption, data consumption and signal needed if you haven't preloaded the maps.

I have an Oregon and it's fine for what you want. One of the really nice things about it is the shape, it feels a bit like a pebble in your hand.

But, I've been really impressed with the OS app on the iphone. The maps are supersharp and can be downloaded when you've got a wifi connection so you're not burning through your data allowance. Having used both if I didn't have the Oregon already I'd probably not bother and go with the phone and OS app especially if it was mostly for walking where you're not looking at the screen as often as you might be on the bike.

Another vote for ViewRanger with premium OS maps! You can buy selected area maps, which is very handy.

When you switch off data/wifi/bluetooth/4G when out and about the battery lasts ages (Sony Xperia Z3).

Garmin Edge Touring is good for this also.

Oregon 650 user, good screen, rechargeable batteries or AA and works where there is no phone coverage which is pretty much where I need this baby.
