I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get one of these as a few events I plan on doing are routed by gpx files. Not a clue what to look for - something I can have os maps on - up to £200.

Garmin Etrex 20x or 30x sure in your price range though not bike focused like the 810 is.
A middle ground wound be the Edge Touring.

I'd looked at the Etrex 30x, I can use that for hillwalking aswell.

I've got a Garmin Oregon 450 which I use for walking as well.
If I'm following a route from a GPX file it won't give me turn by turn directions, just a "follow the line". Works well with a handlebar mount and you can download free maps for them.
If I was upgrading mine, I'd look at the Etrex 30

I've just upgraded my edge 25 to a 520.
The 25 worked fine for nav (although occasoinally I'd miss the turn and have to turn back to catch it) but struggles with routes from external sources as it doesn't take .gpx directly - a complicated (and IME unreliable) conversion process is required.
The 520, although having a 'map' is not really any better for nav, but .gpx can be dragged and dropped with ease. I've loaded mine with talkytoaster maps <<SEE HERE>> and it looks great.
Not actually used it in anger yet, but all the PC based modifications were much simpler than the 25.

clipper247 - Not the newer Oregon, then? Why not?

Price mainly The Etrex 30 does all I need, I couldn't see the need to push out for the 600 or 650. Will see though when my 450 dies (or more likely, I lose it somewhere)

Get an eTrex 20x or 30x. Can't go wrong for the money.

The only thing they can't do very well is in-car directions, as they're a little slow processor-wise, but they are perfect for cycling and walking.

I'd only buy a bike-specific Garmin if you required the heart rate / cadence / power meter features, and / or were bothered about weight and looks.

What about this - I like the idea of buttons.
