I now had my fourth or fifth gout attack. So nothing to worry about in the long term as I can avoid foods and drinks with high purin.

I planning to do some endurance events in July/August.

In the past I used High5 and I was happy with it.

However, most sport drinks contain a lot of proteins which apparently is one thing to avoid when you are prone to gout. What I have read on nutrition in general says: high protein content = high purin levels => gout attack; which is the last thing I want during an 12 hour event.

Now now I am asking myself what sport nutrition drinks I should take or what alternatives I should consider.

I don't think protein, per se, is a big problem, more that meat is high in purines as well as protein.

I'd imagine the sports stuff that contains protein in isolation wouldn't be much of a problem. Being well hydrated matters, of course.

You on any meds for gout ?

I believe sugar and refined grains should be avoided when you are prone to gout

coconut water is considered a great sports drink by many. Its not cheap though, so I only use it on long rides. Whether that is a placebo or not who knows, but it works for me.

Being hydrated can really fight off attacks.

Currently taking no long term meds. Just the usual anti-inflamatories.

Have to do some more research then if "protein in isolation" can set of attacks of not.

Having suffered from gout myself, i found avoiding animal products to be counterproductive and

I believe sugar and refined grains should be avoided when you are prone to gout

this (and gluten in general, so no "healthy" unrefined grains either) to be absolutely gospel.

Have you tried cider vinegar? This does wonders for arthritis so it could be worth trying for gout. Not a sufferer myself so cannot comment but I'd certainly try it.

As for getting energy, I would probably try using more natural sugars such as those in dried fruit. Maybe Honey and molasses as well, as these are another old arthritis treatment. I actually find this sort of food better for powering you anyway.

Good luck with finding something which works out for you.
