I seem to have managed to scape the rear brake hose on my Wife's bike whilst lifting another bike over it. It's just a tiny area (lifting a small sliver of outer) and it's not deep enough to get to the fluid but then again, it is the brakes.

Is this going to cause problems (i.e. a weak spot that's going to worsen) or can I just ignore it?

Mine did .. it was all fine then one day it swelled up like a balloon .. short term maybe tape it but I'd replace when you can.

Which brand? A lot if the time, the outer is just for show. If it has stainless or Kevlar braid underneath and that's okay, then I wouldn't worry.

It's Shimano although only Acera level, so nothing s****y.

I've just had another look and it doesn't look too bad but we'll keep an eye on it. Perhaps it would be worth changing the hose at some point.

Unless you have damaged the white core of the hose, I wouldn't worry.

Tape will do absolutely nothing to help, the pressure in brake lines is hundreds of PSI and will just blow any tape off. I would clamp the brakes on as hard as you possibly can and look at the damaged area. If it looks like it's swelling or anything strange is happening, then replace it. If not, just use it as normal and keep an eye on it.

I nicked mine as per OP other than mine was BH90 not BH59. It looked fine but then a few weeks later the inner part pushed through the outer. As I remember I was replacing pads at the time and giving it a good squeeze... then the pressure droppe3d suddenly and a big balloon of the inner appeared.

I can't go back in time to check but I'd suggest the outer part helps hold in those hundreds of psi and preventing the cable bending won't hurt whilst a new cable is delivered.

I've had a chunk out of mine down to the braids for over a year. It's totally fine.
