Will be my only mountain bike and will he used for used for everything.

Uk Trail centres and general arsing about in the countryside.
Annual alps trip (not full on DH stuff, just regular uplift blues/greens/reds and exploring)

Higher spec hardtail or lower spec full suspension such as Bossnut Evo.
And specific recommendations that I may have missed.

It is replacing a 2012 specialised FSR Comp. which I loved but has been nicked.

Vitus Sentier hardtail for £1k is one of the best options at rrp. Either 27.5 or 29er options I think.

Meant to be great fun and a good spec for the money.

Full suss then the Bossnut is probably the best rrp choice.

Might be worth looking to see what spec Sonder Transmitter you could get for that money too - although I think the Sentier has a more playful frame.

I did buy a Sentier myself as my hardtail (I have a Bird FS too) as I got a bargain frame and built it up with bits I had in the garage already plus a few bargains I got on eBay / CRC. Love it - so much fun.

Does it have to be new? There is some amazing pre owned stuff out there if you are prepared to do the legwork. My last purchase was a full carbon enduro bike with fox factory suspension, full Di2 XTR for £1300

Doesn’t have to be new, but needs to be sorted in the next couple of weeks as we are away to Morzine at the end of June for a couple of weeks and I currently only have a 70lb longtail cargo bike to take 🤔

MTFU. 😉

I’d be looking s/h for that budget, or Paul’s etc if you want new, but previous model years etc

If you check out MBR they have a sub £1k hardtail of the year award this month. In the £750-£1k category the Vitus Sentier 27VR came too, then the Nukeproof Scout 275 Sport, then the Ragley Marley 2.0. They said there was a big gap between the Vitus and the others though.

If you’re going to Morzine though you might appreciate some rear suspension. New just really the Bossnut option but secondhand you could get all sorts of stuff - but just depends what you can find in the short time frame. I’d look for a modern geometry trail bike with your description above. Things that were sub £2k new in the last few years are probably what you should target:

Vitus Escarpe
Calibre BBB (next up from Bossnut)
Boardman Pro FS (blue with Pikes on)
Commencal Meta
Nukeproof Mega (more enduro than trail)
Giant Trance
Whyte T-130

A rather scratched but working well 2016 Radon Slide 150 in 17" flavour. New bearings throughout. Pike 150 with Charger and Fox Evol both full serviced by Stirling Bike Doctor in December. New DT Swiss rear wheel and older Superstar Alpine front running nearly new Hans Dampf and Magic Mary. 12sp NX eagle new three months ago, Xt calipers with Zee levers, three month old TransX dropper, Ergon grips and Raceface bar/stem...

It does have some scratches on bars, wear bits on frame.

£600

That Radon doesn’t sound a bad deal for £600....decent level of travel, new drivetrain, decent fork etc.

I sold a mark 1.5 Bird Aeris for £800 earlier this year, look around for something like that!

Jamis Dakar A2 was £880 at Evans, plenty spare for decent pedals and a dropper.

I’d be watching stuff like this, plus less popular bikes like the cube stereo. You get a lot of bike second hand

I had a similar situation last year, I ended up going over budget with the £1100 nukeproof scout 290 race 2018, it rides amazingly and it's so capable. I would recommend the 2019 scout sport, £999 for spot on geometry and decent kit, also maybe fitting a dropper if you can stretch to that. Perfect for what you are saying, descends quicker than a £2k Marin full sus i tried and is a great laugh.

matt_outandabout sounds interesting for sure. If you have any pics can you send to “myusername”at gmail.com

Certainly sounds good for the money, and pretty much what I need I would think.

Someone at CRC/hotlines was buying advertising that month!

Take your pick, I've applied the correct filters for you...
https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/list/?region=5&category=2&price=..1100&framesize=9,11,12,17,18,20,21,22

Vitus on the first page looks interesting with Morzine in mind.

Edit - you may have to manually apply the small frame size filter, very sorry!

Two letters beginning with “EE”

Slight warning though-they’ll give you wings and we’ll, WOOD!
