Anyone tried both the Gore Wear and Castelli and if so what do you think is the ‘better’ jacket for keeping in a jersey pocket during the spring / summer / autumn for use in wet weather when my Perfetto is just too warm to wear? (I know it’s subjective personal preference)

Our weather is so unpredictable and I’ve been caught out twice in two weeks, making the ride blooming uncomfortable and a light, very breathable, ultra packable jacket would have made the ride far more enjoyable.

Not looking for a winter jacket, I have a Perfetto and ROS Alpha for that.

Thanks.

I have both.

The Idro is a slight baggier cut on me tho oddly tighter on the underarms. The zip on the Idro goes up to the top of the collar whereas the last bit is velcro on my Gore jacket. This leaves a little peephole that rain can get into.

The Gore one has a pocket to pack it in, the Idro does not. The Gore one has some reflective 'GORE-TEX!' markings that help offset the blackness of the fabric.

On balance, there's little to choose between them so get whichever fits betterer and is on sale. Don't pay £200+, you really don't have to.

I’ve got both oddly enough. 1985 seems smaller, lighter and more packable than idro pro 2. Idro pro 2 for me is a neater fit and a more substantial (but still light) jacket. As an emergency jacket for my back pocket I take the gore. If I think I’ll really need it, I’ll be in the idro.

My shakedry jacket was one of my best purchases, always in my jersey unless guaranteed sunshine, as small as a gilet and much more effective. Just to confound things further, I got the 7mesh oro, mainly as it had the best deal at the time, and seemed cut neater (had only tried a gore shakedry on though, and that was an older version). Has funny vents in back which allow access to jersey pockets which I find pretty effective. Would recommend adding to your list, increases your odds of a deal coming up....

Shakedry is an excellent jacket but too fragile for MTB use wear I ride. Too many thorns and brambles
Brilliant waterproof and packs up really small
Got mine three years ago for £100 in a black Friday sale, I'd buy another any day

Aye. My Gore one has been tarmac surfing and seems to have survived with minor perforations... I used some spots of seam sealant on the inside to repair it with no noticeable side effects... 😉

Have you thought about something like a Perfetto light jersey?

I bought one this year and it has been brilliant so far in this unpredictable weather.

I was going to get a waterproof but figured I would just boil when it's warm and wet.

Did a sportive this morning and was comfortable throughout.

I was looking at the Shakedry earlier this week, but on the advice of another thread on here I saved over £100 and got a Galibier Tempest. Not tried it in rain yet, somehow was out 6 hours today and missed all the showers.

I bought a Shakedry a few months ago and was impressed with it but hadn’t really put it to the test. Until today!! Set of on 110 mile ride today with temperatures ranging from about 13 to 18 degrees and forecast for showers. I kept the jacket on all day as there were loads of showers and never once overheated. For about 2 hours of the ride the rain was absolutely torrential! The jacket was ace. I’d highly recommend.

Not tried it in rain yet

We'll that's a solid recommendation for a waterproof. Well worthy of the £100 saving 🤪

I've a had one a few years and only do MTB, I think it's fantastic.

I will never by a jacket with a DWR again. They are useless after few hours of riding. And they never reproof as good as new.

I'm hapo that the risk I may rip the shakedry is worth it to be honest.

I have two, one is the insulated version which you can't wear in anything above zero.

My only gripe would be thr cut is not perfect for me. Slightly too long arms, and not low enough at the waist.

With the performance though I've waited for this sort of jacket for years having wasted so much cash on DWR jackets.

A Galibier Tempest isn't a £100 saving over a Shakedry, it's a £100 less good jacket! 😉

I sort of exaggerate, but I owned a Tempest for 1 week, the fit wasn't perfect on me but the real reason I ended up sending it back was because of just how sweaty it was, I was prepared to have a big argument with Galibier if they wouldn't take it back but credit to them they did. Shame as otherwise it was a nicely finished jacket and Galibier seem like a good company.

I have never had a jacket fit as well as my C7 Stretch, it is a genuine pleasure to wear in the rain because apart from the (relative) lack of sweatiness, it just sits down nicely over your bum, the sleeves don't ride up when you stretch out or sit in the drops, and it's just generally a nice place to steam away in whilst riding through biblical downpours. I even use it as a windproof on cooler days because it is so much better for the task than my purpose made Endura packable windproof.

Buuuut yeah, delicate. I would never take it out on the gravel bike which is a shame as that's where I spend most of my time at the moment...

I have a C5 shakedry, its pretty damn good! As others have said its pretty fragile though so use it mainly as a rain shell on the road bike.

I wore it for commuting once in the wet and had an unfortunate wet drain cover/clipped in/van incident resulting in a tear in one of the sleeves - fixed up with a Gore-Tex patch easily enough though.

Is there an approved way of repairing ShakeDry or is there a company repairing this?

My main gripe with either of these is visibility and there is only one coloured ShakeDry jacket I can think of (Rapha Pink one).

How do the stretch panels work on the Castelli Idro Pro 2? Are they a weak link for water ingress?

My cat clawed mine (twice! I think the rustly fabric was extra appealing to her).

Both times got repaired at Scottish Mountain Gear. Relatively cheap and very neat repairs.

I just used Gear-aid Goretex patches - you can cut them to size if you need to, aesthetically they look better on all black kit but if that doesn't bother you...

My C5 is grey with red trim so a bit better on visibility than the black one - not sure if they still make it in that color.

Also, the Gore logo lettering has started to fall off, but again, that's a very minor gripe for nearly 4 years use.

That is good to know. Scottish Mountain Gear did a very tidy repair of an old eVent jacket. I wouldn't be too worried about durability then.

Do people with the Castelli Idro Pro 2 or similar jackets get on ok with the stretch panels from a water proofness point of view or do you wish for a full ShakeDry jacket?
