You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
after an absolute nightmare yesterday when, totally un-equipped for torrential rain, i ended i having to be sidelined at an event with early hypothermia i'm going to buy a jacket that would cope.
background... ive bought a few in the past. a montane h20 and a montane singletrack. both highly packable and both waterproof for about 30 seconds in real rain. i also have a castelli squadra, great bit of kit for the cash but in summer the lack of breathability makes it unsuitable for me on a very long ride.
looking about the above gore shakedry seems to be the most minimal and waterproof one out there to carry, any one care to agree or point me elsewhere?
I’ve got one and it’s spot on, breathes really well, windstopping as well and been put through some bad weather early this year and dry as a bone at the end. Used for Mtb and road.
That good my wife has decided to buy the running version with the hood to for everyday use. If I were to buy another again I’d probably get one with a hood so can use it for normal duties.
I understand that (I don't have one) they're very waterproof and breathable but not very robust
I'm guessing you weren't in the UK...?!

Just a FYI, the Montane Singletrack is/was made from pertex microlight. It's a windproof, not a waterproof, and moderate rain will come through it very quickly. You can't really compare it to the SHAKEDRY, which shouldn't allow any rain through. Nothing waterproof will feel all that breathable in summer heat.

Shakedry is very impressive from all the reports I've heard, but as WP as it may be it's not an insulator, it won't stop you getting hypothermic pretty fast - that's what primaloft or similar is for. I use a lower spec waterproof to slow water ingress and a primaloft gilet for insulation. You can't stay dry forever but you can stay warm while damp.
The problem I've found with the very lightweight waterproofs isn't their lack of waterproofness but that the lightweight material gets pressed against your skin or underlying clothes and it's sod all use as an insulator plus it tends to lessen any insulating effect of your clothing.
After flirting with hypothermia on the 2016 Braunton 150 I took an Endura MT500 jacket on last year's HT550 and despite it being three times the weight of my lighter jacket I was glad of it when a heavy belt of rain hit in the middle of Fisherfield.
I rode eight days of rain out of nine days LEJOG in my Gore Shakedry and it was brilliant. Never wetted out even in torrential rain and kept me warm/dry the whole way. I’ve used it loads since and it’s the best waterproof out there. Although it’s not very robust so I only use it for road riding
I have the running equivalent of the 1985 and it's awesome, the most breathable waterproof I've ever encountered, even compared to high end North Face and previous Gore stuff. Very light, very packable, and also comfortable worn right next to the skin. Can't fault it really.
Cheers, Rich
What they said ^^^^^ it's an unbelievably waterproof jacket and is the most breathable waterproof I've ever owned. It's never once wetted out, I've crashed mine and it's got a minor scrape at the elbow which is still 100% waterproof. I wouldn't be dragging it through brambles though.
Two things on Shakedry
1) they size up very small
2) echo the brambles 100% mine now has several holes after a single off road ride
