So I was very generously bought a shiny new gopro 8 as a combined pressie by my family for my birthday. I've never had one before, borrowed an ancient one years ago for a Wales trip, so pretty stoked to have one of my own. My question is, before I open it, I've read a few reviews saying perhaps the 7 is a better camera and for less money. Obviously it was a gift, so the cost is kinda irrelevant. What do you all think? Should I keep the 8 for its supposedly improvements from the 7 or send it back and use the money saved for a few accessories. Anyone had real world experience of the two? I'll be using it for bike and surf and snorkeling with the kids etc. The non replaceable lens of the 8 is a little worrying... Help please

Just to add, I'm unsure if the reviews are meaning it's not worth buying an 8 if you already own a 7??

The 7 crashes at higher resolutions, presume the 8 is more stable.

Get a waterproof case for the 8 if it worrries you about the lense.

Given that you have been bought the GoPro as a present I think it would be poor form to send it back and buy other stuff with the money . General consensus seems to be that the hero 8 is marginally better than the 7 . But as has been said the non removeable lens cover is not ideal but you can buy a lens protector . The other issue that gets mentioned is that the built-in mount can get play in it . If someone bought me a 7 or 8 i would be delighted .

Did they introduce image stabilisation with the 8? If so, keep the 8.

I got bought an 8 by my lovely wife and daughter....I didn't have the heart to tell them they could have got £100 off by sending in an old useless digi cam and I certainly would never have swapped it for something almost the same but slightly worse - thats just rude.  What are you thinking!!!

Enjoy it (responsibly, for short periods and not in Wales obviously)

Ha ha! Yeah, I'm not usually one for swapping gifts, but it was my brother they organised the purchase and he would be fine with switching it if he thought it was a better, more robust option. I'm pretty sure the 8 IS going to be marginally better, it's just whether it's as robust for mtb use?? I've read that you can get tempered glass lens protectors, and that the lens is much tougher than the previous gen one. It's just me worrying I guess...
Next question, I was going to get a chesty mount for it, anyone use cheapo versions, or is the genuine gopro one the go to? Seen a few amazon kits with a billion different mounts and accessories for cheap.

Ben looking at a new camera myself, Hero7 or Hero8.

As far as I can tell whilst the 8 has better stabilisation, better resolution and a few more bells and whistles the Hero7 is a very good camera, so good people don't recommend upgrading from the Hero7 to the Hero8. The 7 has image stabilisation, replaceable lens and a solid mount.

It all boils down to how much it will cost you, but in your case that is immaterial. Use some of your birthday money to buy a waterproof case and be grateful.

Oh, and 7 and 8 have image stabilisation, think the 8s is a slightly improved version in theory.

I use the GoPro chest mount and find it to be better than the cheap one that came with a cheap camera years ago . That said the Stunt Man chest harness is supposed to be the best out there and it costs about the same as the GoPro mount .
