spending the weekend up in scotland with the inlaws, can anyone recommend a good loop starting ending in haddington for the weekend,
it'll be early doors 8-10am
i wouldnt mind seeing the coastline dunbar, north berwick etc, i dont mind big hills. it'll be a drop handle which can handle offroad, but dont wanna get too dirty.
and can anyone recommend the quieter A1 crossings, prefereably underpass etc, rather than the roundabouts.
ive got a garmin and iphone with the os map, so if you have a loop i can download that would be ideal.
If you are road biased, a trip up redstone rig out of gifford is excellent, then down to Duns and back over. Very climby but worth the effort! Coast road is dull as dishwater in my opinion. I have ridden it about 18000 times though.......I can point you to a GPS track if you like? If you can go proper CXy, a trip up to Longyester to the foot of the Lammermuirs and back is excellent riding.
You'll have the perfect bike for what you'd like to see (living here, I often ride the route I'd suggest on my Salsa Fargo) 🙂
One option is this easily described/followed route (there are alternatives, but it'd get more wordy!):
Haddington-Longniddry Railway to Longniddry on NCN 76. Then take the road from the small roundabout in Longniddry N to the coast and then follow the John Muir Way (JMW) east through Aberlady and Gullane to North Berwick. ...just follow the coast road for the short section by Gosford Bay, the grassed path alternative is a bit lumpy-thumpy for a (rigid?) drop bar bike, but at east end, you'll see a timber footbridge - leave the road, cross that, and follow the tree-covered path into Aberlady.
Before Gullane, at Luffness Golf Club, follow the JMW through a gate. Into Gullane, then continue east (there are alternatives to the high street here, but difficult to put into words, and it's not a bad road) and at the exit to Gullane follow the cycle path on to North Berwick. Choice at Dirleton to reach North Berwick: dull tarmac cycle path alongside the main road or (preferable) follow the JMW through Yellowcraig.
You can continue following the JMW east/south out of North Berwick past North Berwick Law down to East Linton and then follow NCN 76 past Hailes Castle back to Haddington.
...or, from North Berwick, follow the A198 a few miles passing Tantallon Castle, and taking the private road to Seacliff (signposted toll road for cars). Following the concrete road will take you all the way along to Tyninghame beach's car park where you can then head west along Limetree Walk (the dead end road car park's at the end of) back to the A198. Turn left and follow it for about a mile to Tynighame Village - nice cafe, and quite road there to East Linton.
Rather than NCN 76 from East Linton to Haddington, you may fancy taking the back roads to Athelstaneford (worth visiting the free Saltire Centre doocot there) and then joining Garleton ridge (field track behind the school) up over past the antenna masts to join the Camptoun road back down into Haddington.
Hope that's of use 🙂
Have a look on Ridewithgps, there are a load of routes out that way that you can then save onto your Garmin. Some lovely quiet country roads and excellent scenery, from Gifford down towards whiteadder reservoir then back up to Garvald is fantastic
Thank you jonpavelin and jasonL, I think I.ll take the coastal route this weekend on john muir, I do fancy exploring that coastline,
But I do go up every couple of months. So will do the hillier stuff once it warms up a little,
Had planned the mtb for glentress etc, but drop handle should fit in the wife's car with no roof rack required
The details are brilliant Jason, I'll print off and then plan out on my osmap the basics tomorrow
And thanks dougD I'll check that site out
You're welcome. Was worried info overload! You should see some main road avoiding alternatives to join the dots with the OS map too.
Have a good ride 🙂
