I'm driving Sheffield-Edinburgh tomorrow with a road bike in the boot.

If there's a good road ride not too far off course I might break the journey with it.

Any ideas folks?

That's not far off half of the country. Take your pick...

Of course  there are any number of 2hr loops, but if someone can say "this one is amazing and it's not.much of a detour" then that's ideal.

Detour via Skipton and A65, ride S Dales, certainly the best riding in England. This would be my route choice  https://www.strava.com/routes/14364525

I’d be heading to N. Yorks moors I think.

Sutton bank Helmsley area perhaps. Come off the A1 at the A168 to thirsk then follow your nose. About 90 mins drive from Sheffield. Minimal detour required

Maybe slightly further north in the Dales, somewhere around Richmond - very minor detour off the A1 - and head up Swaledale via Marske to Reeth then back via the TdF route to Leyburn and down to Masham then back to Richmond.

Nice route @whitestone! We used to have use of a cottage in Bellerby, down from Edinburgh by car, walking and biking around the dales was great. Buttertubs Pass when all I had was old Rockhopper - glad of the low gearing 😉
