After removing another x3 thorns tonight, and getting on average 1-2 punctures a week, think its time to consider tubeless 😆
Anyone gone tubeless on their DT Swiss 5.1d's without using the DT swiss kit?
Apparently the rim strip makes it hard to get the tyres off again, its rather secure, posing an issue with tyre failure out on trail requiring much faff..

Thinking Stans a better option?
Tyres reccomended by a mate as light weight Nobby Nics, would I be best with tubeless ready, or not important as i don't have UST rims? Any thought on this tyre choice?

Hi,
did my son's a short while ago.
Use the standard Stan's kit and Snakeskin TLR Hans Dampfs.
Really easy, went on no problem, inflated really easily with a track pump, no leaks at all, don't think they've needed any air in a couple of months.
Survived a summer in Leogang too.
DT swiss kit is fine, requires UST tyres though, my 4.2's kept deflating with TLR Schwalbe tyres. No problems with switching tyres on my rims, the rim strip is very difficult to remove, though why this should be necessary eludes me.
Yellow Stans rim tape, valves and jizz are all you need. Any tubeless ready tyre will work.
Go Ghetto.
I did it on mine with Highroller Lust tyres and couldnt stop them burping. Have used Mavic rims tubeless for years without problem though, so not sure it was user error.

Decided to go with the Stans, after lots of browsing and negative comments about the DT Swiss kit.

Using stans sealant with mine with no problems. I struggle to see why people are experiencing trouble on the trails. I've run mine for 7 years now without any issues. Maybe it's coz I iz not gnarr!
Done both the DT kits and the Stans, Stans is easier to fit. Tyres can be a bugger with either, loss of temper along with spoon handles works best.
I had a brief go a while back with the dtswiss kit on the 5.1 - UST tyres were ridiculously hard to mount so it wasn't a goer for me. Rode ok but called it a day when a tyre bead broke just sitting overnight.
This was some years back mind, so the rim could have changed a bit.
As above I've had minimal problems with either a standard dt Swiss or Stan's rimstrip.
Ust tyres definitely not necessary though. Have used standard maxxis rubber and spesh 2bliss without issue. Just need enough sealant. Currently got a cheap as chips wire bead single ply minion on with the dtswiss strip.

Never used UST tyres, standard Maxxis and Spesh 2bliss have been fine with the DT/Eclipse and Stans rim strips on EX500/5.1 rims.

thanks guys, so whats the difference then in the rim strips and yellow tape? Are rim strips with valve just an easier alternative to fit? I don't mind buying two rim strips if the extra expense is a slightly better seal? I thought the tape was just to cover the spoke holes and the rim strip creates a tighter gap for the bead to sit 😕
Not needing UST tyres is a bonus, as i've seen some Nobby Nics EVO at less that 500 grams! Will be an epic saving in rotational weight.
