Hi all,
Got to have a minor operation at the end of May- will mean 2 weeks of doing nothing and then only light duties for a further 2 weeks (providing no complications).
I want to try and reduce fitness loss in the time as I'm riding well (for me) at the minute.
Any tips from people who have done similair?
I was considering going flat out between now and then and almost seeing it as recovery time- but turning up completely shattered for an operation from a heavy 3 week block might not be sensible.
any advice on how to keep fitness for that time as best as possible much appreciated.
What are you having done ? You might be able to do some turbo training stuff quite quickly if your lucky. Only time I had a month of was for an ACL reconstruction, that was of from work I couldn't ride properly for ages and my fitness took a huge dip. It does come back though.
swimming? zero impact and you can swim with the unaffected bits of you. depends what you are having done

I have to say, that would be my approach, though I expect that would not be the advise you'd get from a medical professional. I'd also be looking at exercise that works other parts of my body and/or is low impact. Swimming and turbo work could work, or just go to the gym and only work the body parts that you can.
I'm not sure if you're a professional racer but I don't think you'll find the drop off is as much as you perceive it may be.
I had 3 major operations within 7 months about 2 years ago with a 6 month gap between the last 2 and longer recoveries than 2 weeks off and 2 weeks light duties and it came back very quickly.
If it's something like knee, hip or other joint it's generally considered best to build the muscle / do exercises pre operation to aid the recovery after so any increase in fitness now is likely to be beneficial I would have thought.
Good luck with the op ... I'll be back in yet again not long after you ... the joys of getting older eehh!
