Evening guys,

I'm going through far too many BB's... OK, the last one i understand as both sides seized due to water and mud. I can live with that. This one though has been treated only to hard trails and sun.
Deore 10 speed setup, running Deore level HT II BB.

What i'm thinking is i've done the litle retention bolt up too tight with my tool, i must admit i give it a decent tighten (with my hand of course) but should i be doing it just finger tight softly and then using the 2 allen bolts for the holding it in place ?

Now i sit back and think about it, most BB issues i've had seem to be on the non-drive side.

Am i on the right lines you think ?

Is the frame faced correctly? With hollowtech BBs, if the frame's not been properly prepared it can be difference between 6 weeks and a year out of a BB

Deore BB is the worst one Shimano do, fwiw... I only use them now on the bikes that see the least use.

But yes, sounds very much like you're overtightening, they should be basically nipped up, no more. Shimano are way better than some people give them credit for, but they're a bit picky about overtightening.

as above.
doing them up too tight has an effect too though, i just do them enough to stop any play, finger tight with 2 fingers should acheive this.

I stick the flat pad of my thumb against the tightener and twist as hard as my thumb skin allows, no more..

Frustratingly, I managed to get through several Shimano BB's a year so I gave Chris King BB's a go and so far so good. I think that being able to service them myself is a good idea although initial outlay is mucho $$$$. Plus what Pinetree says.

HII doesn't like being too tight due to side loads on the bearings, which kills them. Hope say tighten up finger tight and then back off half a turn. I also give the non drive side crank a tap too just to ensure the crank has moved back on the splines.

Fair enough gents, i rekon it's my fault then not the BB's.

Of course being a low spec one i don't expect forever... but longer than i'm getting lol.

I've bought a Saint BB for the new bike and don't want to keep making the same mistakes.

I rekon the frame is fine, the first BB lasted me for ages and ages... LOL i guess there's a lesson in that itself.

As mentioned above - get the BB chased and faced by a good LBS. this makes a huge difference to HT2 BBs.

Didn't Rose bikes have XTR BB for £13?

A lot of folk drill a hole in the bottom of the frame bb shell to prevent sitting water - works for me.

I have a hole in bottom from Giant mate, so no issues there.

I dunno, if they did, i'll buy half a dozen lol

+1 for what Andy says. There is a YouTube vid.

I managed to wreck 2 in quick succession after fitting my slx double & bash and after a bit of searching found the Hope vid. I had used a torque wrench to do as per Shimano instructions and still they failed. Still no issues with current Deore unit after many months and a weeks riding in the Alps 😆
Basically, tighten finger tight and back off half turn. Roller bearings are not designed to be pre-loaded. That's the job of tapered rollers which may make for a better bb but are heavier and take up more space.
The way the axle is knocked through the drive side bearing could possibly cause damage/indents on that bearing as early as the first fitting depending on how sympathetic you are. Giving the axle/chain rings a "good knock" through may start this off 💡

Not sure XTR is any better than SLX/XT, fwiw. They're definately different in design but I can't see any consistent difference in performance.

Get your bb faced at the lbs for the price of a packet of hobnobs

Then try a a deore again, also as stated torque it up property, also make sure the drain hole is free and you are not holding water in the internal bb area.

Probably crushing the bearing like others have said, they dont like side loads..

Facing = snake oil unless you are cranking it up way too tight.

How do you wash your bike? The fact you say the non-driveside seems to go first, makes me think you could be blasting water in...it's normally the driveside that wears out first. Your chainset could be protecting that side from water spray though.

I wouldn't. My Hope has been on for the best part of 3 years (and thousands for miles), still runs well.

You must either be doing something wrong or buying the wrong product.

Sadly my bike doesn't live indoors, so it got VERY wet, muddy and horrible. Add to this living outside and compacted by the fact we've established i tightend the BB jobbie far far too tight.. I think the BB's are not to blam e for any of my recent issues.

I think we're all now well aware i've been doing it wrong mate.

also don't ever jetwash your bike, a normal hose and a brush is all you need, a jetwash forces water past seals, etc

Do you have a link to definitive proof of that?
