I've a fair few bikes in the garage...
I mostly end up riding the 29er single speed, and the Tripster CX bike.
I've a lovely, bling, Commie Meta 5 FS just sat there really gathering dust..
I'm loving the bigger wheels, and often toy with getting rid of the FS and just going 29er 'fun' HT..
Many people done this and not regretted it? I'm unlikely to be going on trips to the alps, and the only time i'd use the FS nowadays is Afan/BPW type things...
Hmm...
DrP
Yep.
I smile a lot these days 😆
skills not springs...
Since I bought a 29er (now on my 2nd one) my fs 26er has rarely seen the light of day!
Bought a Soul and a month later sold the Five! No regrets, and that's riding in t' pennines.
My Lapierre Zesty hasn't been used in almost two years since getting a Salsa El Mariachi, don't miss it a bit.
I've just bought a HT for winter/XC duties, I usually ride a 29er FS AM. I noticed this week that you change your riding style a bit, you move your bum a bit more up and off, you just adjust it. Over stones/trails it makes little difference, but over roots the FS is a lot nicer... but depends how many roots you're riding over I guess.
I don't think it's a problem.. and the 29er HT seems quicker to pick up speed etc.
Yep, twice.
I did Orange Sub5 -> Niner EMD (stolen)
Orange ST4 -> Sanderson Breath (still got)
I sometimes miss it - long, rough pedals and a couple of tough downhills.
The rest of the time, the HT is fun, engaging and a hoot. Bang for buck, there is not competition.
I think it depends on your riding style and where you mostly ride.
Recently I borrowed a nice light HT, normally I ride a heavy freeride style FS.
Loved its lightness on the smooth climbs. But riding my FS for the first time in ages last night I noticed firstly its weight on the climbs - but you can get light FS bikes.
The other thing I noticed was the FS kept traction on the climbs way better than the HT. Also it was better on the flat bumpy sections - I could put the power down better.
Obviously the techy, rooty, rocky sketchy descents were faster on the FS.
I tend to winch and plummet, so you need to think about what you normally do - its going to be a compromise somewhere along the way.
If I had a butler he would be out on the trail with me and hand me the bike most appropriate for the section of trail I'm on.
I've twice bought fs then gone back to a ht. I just stick to my Krampus and my 45650b now and don't miss the fs. I ride mainly xc type stuff but I will take the 45650b up to Aston Hill occasionally.
Yep. Went from a 5" stumpy to a parkwood 29er.
Equally not likely to go mtbing in the alps. Haven't the full suss. I think the HT is quicker and has been good when I've taken it to the lakes which I thought would be a nightmare with the long rocky descents but it was suprisingly ok.
I probably spend more hours on the road and CX these days and compred to coming down Pen y ghent on a cross bike everything seems good.
