I'm about to hit the button on a new XC ht, and as my winter bike is 1x10 I'm intending to do the same to this one. It's got a Deore triple, Deore front mech & shifters with internal routing so hardly any outer.
So if I loose the mainly steel Deore rings, fit an alloy 32t narrow/wide and loose the front shifter & mech howuch can I realistically expect to loose?
Just as a note it's not being done to loose weight but for simplicity and I can't see a need for the front set up as I cope just fine on the 1x steel rigid jobbie in winter.
A few chain links too, about 500g.
Deore kit is good but quite heavy if weight bothers you. I weighed in the rear 11-36 cassette at 468g compared to circa 332g for the xt so well worth a swap if budget allows.
Expect to lose around 300g from the shifter, front mech and cables plus any outers with Deore kit. Deore chainrings are quite (relatively) heavy too, so expect to save 150g from chainrings and bolts on a triple. A hope retainer nw 32t weight is circa 42g. No harm in getting an slx or xt shadow+ rear mech if it isn't already speced with one.
If its a Deore 10spd cassette I'd bin that first, as they are really heavy.
Factor in a chain guide (The Superstar one works well & weighs very little), & you could do without changing the middle ring until its worn. You'll need some shorter chainring bolts also.
Actual weight saving, 500g or so...
These days I'd suggest rather than buying a chainguide, buy a thick/thin chainring- ime they're more effective than a top-only chainguide.
It'll definitely be a narrow/ wide jobbie, the little E13 guide on my fortitude fills with crap.
It's got an XT rear mech, so that's staying. It's a HG50 cassette which claims to be 384g Over here although it may be heavier, but that'll get changed when it wears as I've said in the OP, it's not about weight, just simplicity.
I lost about 500 grammes
I had to buy a top guide too though (about 150g e mount) as I was still loosing the chain , even with a n/ w but I think that's to do with the suspension so on a hardtail would be fine
Also the clutch on my x7 mech loosens up and needs tightening regularly
Don't miss a front mech now with a 30t chainring
I don't see there being an issue with the chain coming off as when I ran 1x9 with a n-gear and a bash the chain came off once in 6 months due to the free hub freezing up.
The general opinion is 500g's; mustn't grumble at a 10.65kg (going off manufacturers claimed weight) 29'er HT
What bike are you buying?
Ooops, I stand corrected a claimed 11.5kg stock, so down to 11kg or there abouts before I change anything else 😀
KTM Aera 29, hopefully
Im going from a 3x9 to 1x10 using a 34t raceface n/w on the front. full suspension bike, im after a braze on s1 type chain guide. any ideas?
Went from 2 x 10 xt to 1 x 11 xx and knocked 2lb in weight off
That's a rather expensive option though
ent from 2 x 10 xt to 1 x 11 xx and knocked 2lb in weight off
Sorry to be sceptical, but I can't see how that adds up, unless you lost circa 250g on the freehub.
