As a contact lens wearer I always wear something to protect my eyes. I've been wearing Oakley racing jackets on the road and on dry days on the mtb and these have worked fine. What i'm finding though is in wet and muddy conditions the mud and grit is still finding its way to my eyes. I guess its running down behind the lenses.
i'm going to give goggles a try and see if this helps. However as this is to fix a problem that mostly happens when its wet I imagine fogging of the goggles is going to be a problem, especially in wet humid forests.
I'm looking at the Smith Squad MTB goggles which look like they shouldnt be too bad with fogging. Anyone here tried them? Or can anyone reccommend any other goggles?
Also any advice from contact lens wearers on how they cope with the mud?
Thanks
Ben
I wear goggles on the DH bike (while wearing a full face helmet) and find they fog up when stationary, but clear quickly when moving, I think it also helps that I take them off when not riding (during uplift/pushing up/sat on ski lift).
I've used Oakleys and 100% and both are great, but the Oakleys fit into my helmet better (the 100% are available to buy if anyone's interested!)
Do you use mudguards? Downtube and fork?
A decent set of those and I can almost (almost) ride without glasses and not have mud getting in and messing with contacts. (I can't, because then the contacts have to deal with cold/hot/dry/dusty/buggy air and that doesn't work either).
I use 100% Accuri, try a double lens to help prevent fogging.
And to save taking a punt on some expensive (relatively speaking) smith squad goggles you could just buy some of the more basic 100% or equivalent and pull the foam out thereby creating near enough the same thing.
Goggles worked well for me in the alps on the trail bike. Waaaaay too hot to wear if you're riding up though and not the most comfortable having them dangling round your neck. I assume you're using a decent mudguard, mudhugger or equivalent? What about glasses with better coverage; jawbreaker perhaps?
I'm using a mudhugger at the moment which keeps most of the mud off but inevitably some manages to get in my eye. I did think about different glasses but they are a hell of a lot more expensive than goggles.
I'm not too bothered about them being hot as hanging them round my neck or sticking them on the helmet when going up isnt too much of a hardship compared to getting mud in the eye, losing a contact lens and having to walk half blind back to the car.
I found the Smith Squad goggles for £59 which after looking at prices on Chain reaction didnt seem too bad. I mean some goggles on there are £100+!
I suppose i could try some cheaper ones and start ripping foam out but im struggling to see the point in buying something and then pulling it apart to save £20
Has anybody actually tried the Smith Squads? Every review i've read seem to love them and they seem to be ideal for my needs but if they arent actually any better than the above option I'll probably give that a go first.
