You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Can anyone enlighten me as to where this is to be found? I've seen several mentions of it on posts on here about riding around Marsden.
Two ways to find !
1. Ride up Binn rd, turn off Binn rd onto wessenden track, follow track past house (about 1 mile up) then follow singletrack for about 3/4 mile just before the second rocky section (steep) turn left up hill nearly back on yourself (that's the goat track)
2. If you know where the shooting lodge is by deer hill res, then follow track past shooting lodge and keep going which brings you out on wessenden (above)
Hope this helps
Cheers ton, but isn't that packhorse? I get the impression it's somewhere up near Wessendon reservoir.
It runs down from the Pennines way buy the former blakestones pub, down to the bridge at eastergate by the hay green hotel.
Cheers Jonny, not been up by Deer Hill res. but know the Wessenden track so I'll try to find it from that end.
STW in ambiguous naming shocker.
The Goat Track I know of is as JRM describes. From Slaithwaite Rd Meltham ride up towards the farm on the farm track, a few hundred yards on the Slaithwaite side of the Travellers Rest on the left. After about 600 yards go right and follow the track past Deer Hill Reservoir, keep on through the gate past the shooting lodge and continue on the path next to the conduit. The track peters out to singletrack and eventually joins the Pennine Way down from Wessenden head to Marsden, coming in at an angle just below the reservoir. Uphill takes you to the Res and then more climb up to Wessenden Head, near to the junction with Greenfield Road above Holmfirth.
Other track known as the Goat Track (sometimes also known as Donkey Path or Packhorse) is in fact Willikay Clough. On the A640 go past Buckstones layby and you'll find a point where the Pennine Way crosses the A640, at a place attractively called Haigh Gutter. You'll see the Pennine Way off to your left from a layby. Turn half left again and you'll see the track leading uphill diagonally away from the Pennine Way. Follow that and it takes you over some very entertaining moorland trail before dropping down into Marsden at the Packhorse bridge behind Hey Green.
Thanks all, I know where to find it now. It was the one that JRM described that I was after, I know the track down from the A640 into Marsden.
Any other suggestions for decent tracks in the area, cheeky or otherwise?
The track down from Cupwith Reservoir to West Slaithwaite, or turn left at the bench to take some lovely moorland rutty stuff to Coal Gate at the top of Cop Hill.
Short and sweet, worth stitching into a loop is Worts Hill Lane, again, left off the A640 just after the turn off to Scammonden.
Email me and I'll let you have some local loops. I'm at Scapegoat Hill so many start and finish there, but there's some good stuff between here and Norland, Ripponden, West Vale, as well as out over Meltham, Cupwith etc. .
I've lived in Marsden for 8 years now and I grew up one village over in Meltham, but I've never heard the Packhorse called the Goat Track.
The trail everyone else is describing is this one: map. I don't ride it that often cos it's a bit scrappy, very narrow in places, bits of it are falling apart, with annoying stiles and ditches and bridges and whatnot. It's alright I suppose, but don't expect an amazing ride.
We should organise another Marsden STW group ride really, it's been a while since the last one.
