So, need a goat link or similar to allow me to use the SRAM X7 mech with a 42t cassette.

Tried using an extended b-screw but still not enough clearance.

So, am I limited to using a goat link or are there other alternatives?

I don't think goat links work with SRAM derailleurs as they replace the B Link that only Shimano derailleurs have.

There are replacement cages that modify derailleurs so that they work with large cassettes, but I think that these are also only produced for Shimano mechs.

Is the cage on your X7 particularly short? If that's the case a longer cage may work better. The cages are probably available as spare parts.

You could try one of these

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F232681711515

Pretty cheap so it's not a tragedy of it doesn't work for you.

Realised after posting that the goat link was Shimano specific.

Came across a thread on mtbr about using the road link with SRAM mechanical.

Have ordered the copy in the eBay link - will see how that goes.

Right then - swapped the cassette on my lads bike to the Deore 11-42t and fitted the £1.69 Chinese 'groat-rink'.

After a bit of fine tuning it on bl***y works!!

Only issue I have is not being able to pedal backwards on the 42t, but can't see that being too much of a problem.

So in conclusion you can't go wrong for the price.
