Just setting up a 1x on the wife's bike using a chinese mech extender like the Goat Link but I'm not convinced by the positioning. It moves the mech down but I would expect it to move it down and back. The shifing isn't nearly as slick as my bike with a Rad Cage. I did want to get another rad Cage but they don't seem to be available any more. So if I am settling for the chinese doo-dah is it positioned right?

I bought a copy. It didn't work.

Bought the proper one and I think it shifted better than normal.

I know that doesn't help!

Doesn't look right - it looks to me like you didn't remove the bit of the derailleur the goat-link should replace. Seems to be more bolts than there should be.

I've got a Goatlink on one bike, Pilo S10 (goatlink copy) on another, both 1x10 - both move the derailleur down and back.

(Pilo works fine btw, about 15 quid on ebay)

I bought a copy on eBay, replaced the bit you remove. Made the shifting terrible. I went back to the original bit on a 10 speed 42t and it worked fine.

I have a goat link and I removed the little hinged arm from the mech and replaced it with the goat link rather than adding it in.

I'm not sure how adding in a pivot, as above, is conducive as it drops the mech lower but no further back ....

Bit of an update. I found some pictures online and it is fitted correctly but just didn't seem to work that well. The hanger is nicely aligned, I checked it before and after fitting. To improve it I decided to attack with the Dremel so it sits further back, more like the proper Goat Link. I added a notch at 45 degrees to angle it back and, low and behold, it was much worse. Added another notch at 10 degrees, so not so far back, and that was much better. It is quite sensetive to B screw tension but it changes through all the gears nicely enough. Its not peferct so I'll keep an eye out for a Rad Cage or an 11 speed mech but it'll do for now.
