So my old man had a hour long microlight flight today and 'Yodagoat' was kind enough to lend me his Go Pro. All good except Windows movie maker obviously needs a codec to work with the camera as It displays a black screen though I get sound. Anyone know where I can get a virus free codec? , Im running Windows 7 x86.

Heres a screenshot from today , Looks Ace.

Not sure n the codec, but it might be included in the d/l of GoPros own CinePro software that is a free download on their own site. It's probably a better editor too.

Free trial of Vegas? (for Gopro HD, get the Vegas with the longest name you can- Movie Studio HD Platinum works for me but standard Movie Studio
HD can't run the preview usably for some reason)

I wouldn't recommend you buy it, their customer service is laughable, but their demos are very abusable.

Mpeg Streamclip may be able to convert for you?

I got my codecs for this from Cnet.com, some (if not all) downloads are checked for malware and other nasties. Better than just downloading whatever comes up in Google search 🙂

Try installing whatever software came with the camera, that may well install the codec.

Then go back and try windows movie maker

No idea what a codec is but I am regualrly driven batty with the goPro Moviemaker combination. The latter will only let me use one album of music, which is a bit limiting!

Looks an ace day.

The codec is h.264

The problem with editing this stuff with transcoding it is that it is more of a "presentational" codec not really an editing one so editing software finds it problematic.

I got so fed up trying to get moviemaker to work on my pc with HD GoPro vids I ended up buying an iMac and it's now easy-peasy using iMovie.

Managed to knock up the first part but forgot what a chore using Movie maker is. Will do the second part of his flight tommorow , but thanks for your help. By the way Windows live movie maker works fine with the Go Pro files.

Windows Live Movie Maker didn't work for me (on Vista 32bit).
I wonder if it depends on which other codecs (via other software potentially) you've installed.

In the end I used The GoPro CinePro software, which cunningly wasn't mentioned on their FAQ! so left me trawling for a couple of hours.

No, But it did convert everything to AVI in a way that apparently other editing software likes. I used Adobe Premier CS3 (which couldn't open the MP4 files).
