Go Outdoors - not a minor rant in the slightest

Went in to get a new Berghaus Pravitale hoodie today as my trusty few years old one has eventually fallen apart after being worn most days for work.

Sticker said 'Member price - £95' - which was good, as I only had my phone to pay contactless.

Got to the till, scanned my card, came up as £113. I mentioned the sticker price, but said I'd go and check in case I'd made a mistake. At the same time the cashier had radioed a member of staff to check. It did indeed say £95.

So, she rang it through at £95 and then knocked another £15 for my 'inconvenience' (of spending 30s walking back across the shop floor). So, £80 - checked the website later and it should currently be £113 to members  🤣

Little wins and all that...

They're an excellent shop with great customer service.. Spending two or three hours in the Stockton one is always a highlight of my return trips to see family in the UK.

It's currently £92 at the berghaus website, with free delivery, if anyone else is after one!

I recently became a member when I was looking for an Osprey Serial 7 waist bag . Buying a £5 card reduces the price from £90 to about £45 👍
I see the Calibre Boss but already an amazing price can get another £200 off just by paying a fiver for a card . I'm not complaining but does anyone know how that works? Surely they'll go bust eventually?

Of course RRP is just a number that no one ever pays but even so

15% off for scout leaders too, which is handy.

I used to get my woggle out at the till, but the nice judge told me I had to stop doing that 😉

They’ve been doing it for 20+ years. Most of their stuff can be bought at a comparable price elsewhere, I regard the £5 membership as a way of them getting their hooks into you, and of course, targeted advertising to you, so you go back as you get the discount, but dont bother checking the price elsewhere, as they are convenient, with a nice showroom where you can see loads more stuff to buy that you werent planning on buying.

Contactless limit normally doesn't apply when you're paying with phone...

https://www.visa.co.uk/how-you-pay-matters/payment-technologies/contactless.html

With mobile contactless payments, you can even make purchases over £100 where approved by the retailer and your bank.

Go outdoors will price match that and then knock another 10% off

They were 55 quid on Sport Pursuit recently, still are, 40 quid for small blue ones:

Sorry OP, a bit late, but might be useful to someone.

Go Outdoors price match and then discount to Berghaus is daft as they are both owned by the same ultimate parent company.

When I’m old and even more bad tempered I’ll put in an advertising standards complaint  The sticker says price £1500 or £1200 with card. As the card costs £5 it should say £1205 or £1200 with card

But what about those hardcore anti-tech people who battle against the man and like to make life difficult for themselves in a vain attempt to maintain their ideal of privacy? They won't be giving over their personal details for a membership card and will therefore have the option to pay the full £1500 with their untraceable cash.

As a “tight wad” and a Scout Leader I like to play the discount game. Millets usually beat Go Outdoors despite them being the same company!

How does one prove they're a scout leader? I got a discount recently but couldn't prove I was a leader, they just trusted me (and the cashier guy was also a leader... So he said, he didn't prove it)

Whom would confess to being such, that wasn’t?

I have my "purple card" in my wallet. Also, one of the cashiers once asked me which unit. As I answered without hesitation he accepted my word.

They have never asked to verify the on-line discount, but in store you can get the discount in addition to sale prices.
